Thanks,

From the Butler building web site...........

I need a new grain bin, but I can't find anything on your Web site about them. Does Butler still make grain bins?
In order to focus on the more involved custom-engineered buildings in which we specialize, Butler sold the Grain Systems division to CTB, Inc. in June 1997.

Try this...............

Personally, I want a square or rectangular building..............

Before you buy a new one, take a drive thru the country.
They come in all sizes and farmers are always upsizing, down sizing, in general changing things.
It is not hard to spot some that are not being used. You may get a good buy.
Butler is the main mfg. They are the horizontal corrugated ones. I have never seen a rusted Butler. I can’t say that for some of the others.
It is a 2 man job, one inside and one outside, with wrenches and with a front end loader on a tractor to hang the panels from, to put them up or take them down.
Depending on where you are located you might find a local guy the that moves them. They usually take of the top ring with the roof attached, then split the reminder in half horizontally so they can get under wires etc. Depending on the diameter, they will know how to take it apart as little as possible and still not need any special permits for the over the road part.
They are a kind of neat space when you are inside, but I don’t know how practical for a shop. They are round because of the inherent strength of the shape and the fact that you get the most square footage for the least wall footage in that shape.
I don’t know how you would put a big door on one.

I've spent alot of time shoveling, augering and cleaning inside metal grain bins, quite frankly I can't imagine using one for a shop. They're like working in an echo chamber. When I was about 15 I foolishly took the job of jackhammering the concrete out of the inside of one so that it could be moved. Tell you what, after 4 days inside that bin there wasn't nothing working right in my body.

Agreed, jackhammering is an extreme example, but any noise inside a grain bin soon gets really irritating. The only possible solution off the top of my head would be to spray-foam the inside of the walls which would deaden the sound.

I've seen many 18ft diameter bins moved in one piece, using a machine that picks them up and lays them on their side. Dad moved 4 of them onto his place that he bought at a goverment auction. Spent days digging the lower ring out of the dirt(had sheetmetal floors in their original location), many more days digging trenches at home to put them in, and then concreted the inside after moving them into place.

One of Dad's neighbors sold bins, I worked for a short time one summer assembling them. Given the right jacks etc they aren't bad to assemble, other than they have alot, (no, ALOT), of bolts in them.

If I remember, I'll take my camera to work tomorrow. About two blocks from my worplace, there is an old round silo that a small lawn company has turned into their maintenance area. It has a door on it.

I'll take some pictures of the outside, but I don't have access to the inside.

Thanks to all for the feedback so far. I am just looking to do something different from your standard garage which I already have. Anymore feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Looks like it's been a while since anyone on this forum expressed interest in a metal grain bin.. but, I have one for sale in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. You can check craigslist.com to check pictures or reply to this forum for more info.

If your area has a trader paper, seems like every place does, look in the agricultural section and you'll find one. Me and my partner put a 10,000 bushel bin together for a fellow we used to do work for. It was used and he bought it really cheap. Put the top ring together and then put the roof on it. there were winches on tripods for every joint, can't remember now but it seems like there were 6 of them. raise it up and put another ring at the bottom, and on and on. This thing was pretty big, seems like we poured a 28' slab for it to set on. it was at least 24 or 26 feet in diameter. It was pretty tall too. interesting project. hope y ou find one you can use and good luck with it

I don't know the name of the company but in Glennville, GA on US 301 there is a large commercial chicken equipment supplier that sells them. Good luck in your search!

Keep an eye on farm auctions. Saw one go last year. Disassembled and ready for transport. Went for a few hundred bucks.

I've often thought one would make a great garden shed, a lawn mower shed, and even a "man cave" with a pool table, couch and TV. Carpet the floor and hang a ceiling in the man cave, and it'd cut way down on the noise.

I was somewhere once... I think a race track... they had a two-story grain bin they'd converted to very nice offices. The interior walls were finished, and it was a regular office building, just round.

Hope you like it hot, because thats what you're gonna get - a very HOT hobby space. Spent much of my youth cleaning those out on the farm. Learned early on the value of getting up early and beating the heat.
