Looking for new LED work light

I am looking for a magnetic LED work light that can function both on my metal peg board (clinging and pointing down) over my bench as well as under car for brake jobs, and in the engine compartment. The Milwaukee lights look big and awkward with battery attached. I am looking at this one:

It is about 11 x 4 and seems to adjust in many directions as well as being magnetic and having hooks. It is 350 lumen (high setting), lasts for 90 minutes and takes 3 hours to recharge.

Thoughts and recommendations?

How long on a charge for the Astro? Could you attach the magnet to a metal peg board and bend it facing the work bench for fine work? How long to recharge?

Stuck to the wall above my younger son's bed are some "tin" superhero signs. These are quite a bit thinner than metal peg board, and my HF Braun light has been absconded from me to use as a reading lamp, because it attaches quite well to these signs. I need to pick up some more...

I really don't know the recharge time. It uses an 18650 battery inside, and I've got a charger that will charge two of those at a time, so I just swap batteries when it is empty.

I have three of the HF Braun LED lights

For $19.99, they are hard to beat

The magnet is very STRONG and the LED is very bright

I've been meaning to make a trip to Harbor Freight. Its about an hours drive away from me. I will check it out. The Astro is a beautiful light but expensive ($65). I do some detailing (no real body work) and it may be great for that. Worrying about the Braun in tight places?

The biggest problem with the Braun is that they're often sold out. I'd hate to send you on a two hour drive, with nothing to show for it.

I recently picked up a new Snap-On ECARBO42 dual function magnetic LED light and really like it. It serves as a 300 lumen flashlight or a 450 lumen task light depending on which function you have it on. It is fully adjustable and has become my new favorite go to flashlight.

I use this light from Lee Valley on my Band Saw. Puts the light right where you need it. Several different ways to mount it and the price is not too bad ($32) and it is made from anodized aluminum (has a nice 'quality' feel to it)

I can recommend the Astro 40SL 410 Lumen Rechargeable COB LED Slim Work Light.

I recently used it to do a brake job in my son's garage.

Other than a 100 watt oh bulb and a 4' florescent light over the bench in the corner of the garage, the ASTRO was the only light source.

It lasted about 6 hrs on a single charge, or it will run off the charger.

From AMAZON: "The 40SL was designed for the harsh conditions of the automotive repair shop where grease, grime and solvents are an everyday occurrence. Due to popularity of its design, and particularly the magnetic base, the 40SL can now be found everywhere from HVAC and Electrical to Towing and Heavy Machinery trades."

I stopped by one HF the other day looking fo them, and they were all out (this is the second time I’ve looked there). Just now, I stopped by a different HF on my way home from work. That’s where I got mine, but today, none. :(

I scored two Braun LED's today for $19.99 each plus free batteries! They must have just gotten there because the shelf was empty and they had one unopened box in the back. I decided to buy two since I went through so much trouble researching (with the forums help) and picking them up. Thanks to all the recommendations (it was tough deciding!). I really liked the Milwaukee (and its red!) but the fact the the magnet is so weak on the back was the deal breaker for me. Not to mention I can buy three Brauns for one rover. The Astro was awesome and I most likely will get one for my detailing work (spending too much right now).

Haters gonna hate....

Out of stock most of the time = "score" when you find one in stock.

Got a Braun a few weeks ago. Love it so far, but have not had to charge it yet. One disappointment is that the instructions state it will damage the battery if you leave it charging beyond the max recommended time. That is a PITA for a garage tool.

Well, it's not a "you ****" score, but I guess we all have different heights that we set the bar.

Anyway, last night on the way home from work, I "scored" two more myself. The store that never had any in the two times I'd been there since they had a peg for these, had a bunch this time. I went for the 6-in-1 screwdriver freebie, as I could use one at work (to lend out as the "screwdriver of shame"), and I'm swimming in magnetic trays.

So now my first one is a reading lamp, and I can't complain about it being stolen any more.

My guess is that since the light goes from red to green, it probably stops charging, and that line in the instructions is an artifact from ni-cd days that the lawers insist they keep. But since I have a charger that does two 18650 cells at a time, I've been using that.

I did discover one problem with these lights last night BTW. I was using one on the dim setting in a darkened room, and it really annoyed my wife. She said it was giving her a headache. Her eyes are more light sensitive than mine in general, which is why I was on the dim setting, but the dim setting was apparently worse.

By squinting and looking at the light as I waved it in front of my face, I saw that the LEDs are on all the time on the bright setting, but are pulsed to dim. I didn't test it like a strobe, but I'd guess its around 60hz. That's not something that people can see in their central vision, but it's right around the range that more sensitive people (usually women) can be annoyed by in their peripheral vision. That's one reason why some people dislike fluorescent lights more than others.

How did you wire it to charge both at the same time? Do you have a USB box with multiple ports? Not sure what you mean. The pulse is interesting, that would be annoying even though not obvious. Kind of like sound that is not audible but gives headaches. I plan on using mine over my workbench on high setting only when working. The charge wires are not long enough to reach my surge protector (which has two USB ports). I would like to be able to charge them without taking them down (magnetically attached over workbench). Thats why I asked about your setup. I chose to do this approach directly over the bench for detail work. Ever since I had lens replacement surgery, I need plenty of light. I might hang some fluorescent lamps eventually but this works well in the new garage.

That’s the BIG Larry. That’s the one that’s comparable in light output to the HF light, but doesn’t flex, and the rechargeable one is more expensive.

I’ve got a few of the Nebo Larry COB lights. These are small, cheap, and pretty nice for the $6-7 bucks I’ve paid.

The Nebo Leo is like the Larry, but has a pivoting AND swiveling head that’s more positionable then the HF (also has that tip light). It also has better dimming (seems continuous). But it isn’t as bright either.

BTW, I just noticed that the head on this rotates as well as pivots. I'm not sure how I didn't see this before. Last night, I wanted to discuss some gardening issues with the wife, and I handed her one, as I grabbed a second. I then noticed that the power button was under my thumb on one, and opposite it on the other.

Turns out that you can rotate the light bar 180 degrees on the handle. I'm not quite sure this makes it any more useful, but the feature is there nevertheless.

Thanks to my daughter's fine efforts at using a parking garage pole to tear off the front fascia of her Honda Fit, I had an opportunity to utilize my newly-acquired Braun light over the weekend. You can shove this thing about anywhere on that tiny little Fit and it's bright enough for about any task, even on the low setting. After only one job, it has become the go-to of my garage light collection.
