What are you using? metal or conventional?

Im looking to fit one in an area 50x50 on my wall and have been looking at the Wall Control pieces. They have painted and galvanized. Anyone using these or know who else makes painted sets? thanks!

I'm just using the standard wood stuff from Home Depot. I looked into the wall control stuff but just couldn't justify the extreme price difference. However I didn't like the standard white so I painted it with some hammered silver paint. I'm more than happy with it. Though I did have to go back to HD three times to get all the panels I needed. Each time they only had three or four sheets in stock.

I have a whole box of Wall Control pegboard sitting in my living room at the moment. I'm still finishing up the wall that they will go on.

I took one out of the box to inspect, and they're really nice. The finish is excellent.

I ordered a custom size -- 26" high (and still the standard 16" wide) -- and the cost was still very reasonable. Should end up being a bit over 13 feet of pegboard when it's up.

And they were great to deal with, too. Highly recommended.

yes they do look nice. Home Depot has a good price on them so will prob order 2 panels this week. Sometimes my concrete walls sweat and I figured the cardboard stuff would soak it up but didn't want galvanized. thanks for the feedback!

My answer: the cheapest pegboard I could find. Spend your money on good hooks. Nothing more crazy-making than hooks that come out when you grab a tool.

Lots of guys here on GJ don't like pegboard, but I find it quite useful for certain applications. I keep most of my tools in a rolling toolchest, but also keep a second set of most-used tools on pegboard above my bench. Really handy to be able to reach up and grab a wrench or screwdriver without getting off the stool.

Didn't go for the 1/4" pegboard at HD or Lowes (mainly because I already had a gazillion 1/8" hooks). Instead got a 4'x8' sheet of 1/8" pegboard from Ace Hardware, cut it to size, reinforced it and painted it white. Very pleased with the functionality of its application.

In the garage I have some cheap pressed pegboard and some plastic interlocking peg modules. I think they're both adequate but the poly is more durable. I use Stanley multi piece pegs. Everything works out okay but I plan on slatwall at my next build.

I've been thinking about trying the metal pegboard myself.

Dumb question: Do the pegs make those high pitch noises? My ears are super sensitive to high pitched noises like fork on plate, knives being sharpened, etc.

Home Depot had some with a nice hard white finish called Garage Liner.

I ave lots of pegboard in the garage, see it here: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=140674&highlight=26'+30'+Garage+photos+videos

This is what I have in my garage now, white peg board from HD. It's been on the walls for 15+ years and the only problem I've had is sometimes the little plastic hook retainers break when I pull tools off the wall.

I looked at the metal wall control stuff for the new garage but it's hard for me to justify the $9+/sqft cost over <$2/sq ft pegboard that has lasted 15+ years with no maintenance issues. I'll probably end up with white pegboard in the new garage as well.

I have three different types of peg boards. The metal (Wall Control), Plastic, and Press Board.
-The Wall control is by far the best of the three since it is the strongest and has the most options for pegs or hooks. It allows for an easy install to minimize wasted space since the mounting holes are incorporated in the frame and allowing more surface area usage. The Wall Control is harder to get then the press board but easier than the plastic board.
-The plastic, in my opinion is the most difficult to use. It is the same thickness as the press board but does not have the rigidity as the press board. It can be bent to help give it more rigidity. Painting it also more difficult to keep sticking to the peg board. Seems to want to wear off easier.
-The press board is the easiest to find and work with since it is just like working with wood and most people have wood tools.

I just get the regular fiber board at my Home Depot. Jack is right, though. Nothing makes me madder than to pull a tool off of the wall and hear the hook go clinging across the floor.

I used the 4x8, ¼ inch, white, “Garage Liner.”
I got mine at a Menards, but it is all the same stuff.
The regular hooks will work, but the HD ones meant for the ¼ holes work much better.
They usually have an extra little “peg” to help them stay in place.
I also save the wire from the election signs that show up some years.
It is great for making custom hooks for a special need.

I like peg board for the ease of moving things around until you get the “just right” arrangement.
Once you have that, don’t be afraid to use hot melt glue to set your hooks into a semi-permanent location.
You can break them lose if you want, but they won’t just fall free from normal use.

I liked Norm Abram's suggestion from the New Yankee Workshop when they set up a shop. They lined the walls with plywood. This allowed for effective placement of tools and shelves in a very planned way or even arbitrary using nails. Its pretty low tech.
