Hey Guys,

I am currently having a house built and I am now looking deeply into cabinets, work tops, and tool chests.

If you guys could add pictures or links to products you recommend that would be appreciated also.

-I am looking for something in a white or silver like color (I feel black will actually look worse in the long run)

- something some what durable that will last me years to come (this is going into my personal garage so no shops hands will be using this stuff just myself)

-I'd prefer something that has built in tool drawers so that I no longer need the "tool chest" I'd like everything to flow together as one piece

I'd like to also stay at a Max price of 6,000 if possible, I may spend more if I see something I really like.

Thanks for any helps guys!

Maybe something like this would be of use to you... I purchased these in the spring from Costco, they are 24ga steel cabinets made by NewAge products. this is the link here: http://www.costco.ca/NewAge-Bold-Series-12-pc-Cabinetry-Set-in-Grey.product.100095310.html

They have a number of cabinet sets to choose from, you can even build a custom set to suit your needs. I highly recommend these, the shipping was fast, and they have been excellent so far... well worth the money, plus I've received plenty of compliments from visitors and my shop isn't even close to being completed yet.

I should add that I added the T-8 light underneath the upper cabinets, along with the pegboard to suit my scope of work.

These New Age cabinets seem very nice, my only issue is they have no tool drawers. They look better suited for general stoat he which is fine, but I'd prefer something with smaller tool drawers.

NewAge has 5 drawer tool cabinets in the Pro Series and the Performance Plus line. Bolt 2 together add wheels and a chunk of butcher block. That set up would cost you about 1150.00, and look sort of like this;

I just installed two sets of New Age Pro cabinets in my workshop and am pretty happy with them. They are currently on sale at Costco right now ($500 off per set) and come in grey or beige. I bought the beige and love the way they look. The tool cabinets that come with them are very nice with full pull-out drawers. The base cabinets have a pull-out shelf.

I also have two sets or their cheaper/thinner cabinets that almost look chromed. A little flexy but they are awesome for garage storage and for $989 a set on sale, I couldn't be happier.

New Age has KILLER customer service if you ever have a problem.

Look into Lista cabinets for high density and efficient organization; a sample below

I'm in NW side by Jersey Village, not too far from you. I own primarily Vidmar cabinets but I prefer Lista over Vidmar.

That's not my setup, just a photo from the google search. Brand new setup like that would cost you about $5K, which is cheap compare to Snap-On storage solution.

That setup is very ideal for homeowners because there are overhead shelves, tool drawer cabinets, and slide-shelves cabinets (lower cabinet on ends); there are more sliding drawer or sliding shelf than static shelves, which is a very important in the storage solution design, IMO. The key point is accessibility, and drawers are more accessible than static shelves; the ability to keep it organized over the decade is easier than static shelves.

I learned over the decade of being in the garage with various hobbies is that drawers are a lot more valuable than shelves (open or behind-doors). Even in the home kitchen cabinetry, all the experts will recommend you a lot of drawer cabinets into the mix.

I can confirm that. I placed a small order during the 4th of July sale. They arrived packaged poorly in oversized boxes. They were scuffed and scratched, and two had the doors knocked off. I sent John at ShopStorageCabinets.com an e-mail with pictures, just to let him know that I would have liked to see better packing, especially as I was essentially trying out the product and plan to buy more in the future. He replied that he had sent my e-mail and pictures on to NewAge and they would be in touch. While there was no more communication from there, which could be improved on, a full replacement set of cabinets, packaged correctly, arrived Monday. Both NewAge and ShopStorageCabinets.com are good in my book.

Only caveat is I went with the Performance Plus line which were on sale at the time. I think if I was to do it again I would step up to the Pro Series. The performance plus are thicker steel than most of what you will find retail, but I expected them to be a little more. Nice stuff though, especially at the price point.

Placed a big order through John AKA dittle fart around. Got a call from the shipper today that it will be arriving tomorrow. I guess they are somewhat close by to me.

Can't wait..... I'll let you know what I personally think of the quality.

Cost and durability have a hard time going hand in hand. I will second Lista / Vidmar, but there is also Lyon and Equipto which have the same design but do not offer as many options as the first two.
You can go with some lesser makes but you will compromise depth, strength, options, and in my opinion warranty.

Just out of curiosity, why the preference?
Lista has a sleeker design, that's all. The only major different between the two is Lista has full drawer height for all of their drawers while vidmar doesn't for couple of their drawer configuration.

maybe someone can help me on this. I too am looking to purchase costco's new age steel pro set.

however.... my garage has a foundation lip about 1 inch that sticks out from under the drywall. I've looked at the new age cabinets and see that hte back of it is flush.

Any recommendations on how i could install these cabinets? what is hte workaround with the foundation lip? i'm sure a lot of people have this problem right?

or is the base of the cabinets not welded to the cabinets and i can rest the back portion on the lip and install the front legs on the cabinets?

I don't really want to pull the trigger yet on the cabinets until i know how to install them. any suggestions would be great.

here is the costco set. it costs a pretty penny.

thank you!

The legs on the bottom that you see in the picture are bolted in place. The cabinet is actually flat on the bottom. You could redrill the mounting holes for the back legs a little more forward and just mount them that way. Note that they have a captive nut, so you would have to use different hardware, or have a new captive nut to put in place. I think that would be the cleanest install method.

How big of a workspace are you looking to have? Would you be looking at doing an entire wall with cabinets or just an 8ft or so workbench with cabinets above?

Its just non treated pine 2x6s. Just ran them through a planer and joiner to grt them flat and square. The boards were the glued together using biscuits. It is 2 layers thick which are glued and screwed together. Then i just sanded, threw on some stain and poly. Good to go.

I am just finishing up my new shop and I too was looking for a nice quality, heavy metal cabinet that I could get that wouldn't break the bank but look good and last a life time.
I attended the SEMA show last year and spoke with every cabinet vendor there. After three days of talking and pricing and taking pictures to review later I came away with what I thought was the best avenue.
The cabinets I chose where Hercke. Here's their website http://www.hercke.com/. They are heavy duty, come in two or three different finishes, including stainless (I wanted something that would look good with the graphite and black race deck flooring I already had and not show fingerprints) and best of all they have a layout program on their site that allows you to design your setup. So you can see what your cost will be as you lay it all out.

Here's what I choose.

While they do offer a hardwood countertop, I opted to have one made at my local trim maker as they could do it in one piece where the Hercke would require two.

The cabinets arrive in heavy duty boxing and are very easy to assemble and hang. The drawers feature soft close actions and come in different sizes.

I could not be more pleased with my choice to go with the Hercke or with how I was treated before and after the purchase.

Cheers!
