Reminds me of the fellow that was trying to put a Ford fender on a Chevy. He said that they were both the same color, and he just couldn't understand why they wouldn't interchange......:lol_hitti

I got the impression you didn't want to remove the cover at all, and I'm thinking, "you cannot get the wheel off without taking it off", now I see, you want to not operate it with the cover off. Sorry.

I looked at the Delta 8" grinders with this option, just now on the internet, and I really like them, might have to spring for one. Only one I have now is a 6" Craftsman 1/3 hp, real old unit.

Nope.. that isn't the reason. The reason is his laundry list of requirements that he is requiring. In his original post, he wants all the bells and whistles to continue to work on his grinder, but he isn't willing to spend the $$$$ to get what he wants. In essence, he wants a specialty item at a bargain basement price. I just don't see how he is going to accomplish this unless he buys the item as a complete unit. Most, if not all manufacturers that design specialty items make the parts a proprietary item just so they can't be retrofitted to another brand, just for this reason. If I could buy a few items and convert a Chevy into a Lexus, there would be no market for Lexus automobiles. :lol_hitti

From looking at the Delta site, it looks like a large flange nut with "wings" for tightening with your fingers. They list two, so I assume a left hand thread and a right hand thread. It looks like the guard removes without tools also.

I'm also assuming that there is no other locking device on the "wing nut" other then it being left and right hand threads, which will give a self locking effect just like any other grinder. As you really don't need (or want) to apply a lot of torque to a grinding wheel mounting nut, it would probably be OK, although I got to say I'm not real crazy about it. It might be an issue on removal though. They do tend to tighten with use (left and right hand threads!!) and there may be times where a wrench may still be necessary to loosen the nut.

Given those assumptions, you could build one. Of course, while it could be built by hand, a lathe and milling machine would speed up the process and hopefully give you a balanced piece when done, something that I would consider important.

In a nutshell, I've never seen that before and don't know of a cheaper place to buy one. It might be easier to buy a cheap wrench and a piece of chain to hang it from the grinder.
