Any recommendations from you guys? Typical useage will be laying out foundations, hanging cabinets, drop ceiling installation, grade work. Right now I'm considering a Johnson kit at Home Depot for $399.00 that comes with head unit, detector, tripod, telescoping 8'3" reference pole, etc. Rented one last week (different manufacturer), need it again so my "rent first time, buy second time" rule kicks in... :)

Thanks.

I bought and like this one: <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000QSGRTY/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=sokoloffcom-20&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399369&creativeASIN=B000QSGRTY">Pacific Laser Systems PLS-60521 PLS180 Tool, 180-degree Fan Angle, Plumb and Level Line Tool</a><img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=&l=as2&o=1&a=B000QSGRTY&camp=217145&creative=399369" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" /> Does level, plumb, both, is tripod mountable and has a pulsed mode for outdoor use as well. I've mostly used mine indoors, where it's been super handy. Mount a plasma TV? Easy. Layout cabinets? Easy. You'll find more uses than you think once it's on hand and "free" to use.

Stabila's the best, hands down!

Stabila makes one of the best levels, I have 6 of them but the don't make the best rotary laser. I have used topcon, pls, hilti, dewalt, and many others. Used to be union carpenter and installed hundreds of thousands of square feet of acoustical ceilings in hospitals, schools, packers stadium, etc.

My favorite is topcon.
