Hey guys, I'm looking for ideas on how to divide / separate my shop into 2 rooms when needed.
I'm looking at building a 30'x40' garage with 12' ceiling and 1 12'x10' door. I'll be workign out of the shop year round and I need an installation bay for work. The bay will be used for installing vehicle graphics and not for mechanic work.

on the other side of the shop will be my printing equipment, I'd like to keep this area as clean as possible and try to keep the temperature fluctuations in the winter down to a minimum when the bay door is open. That being said I's also like to be able to open up the work space if it's needed for other large projects.

My idea 1st was to make a solid wall in the middle with a couple of Large sliding doors. But i'd still end up with 8' walls on either end of the shop when they were open and a 15' opening in the middle so only about.

I've been trying to think on some type of system that you'd see in a large school Gym or hotel conference room where they can divide the area into smaller rooms when needed.

I know at some point the bay will be used for dirty work it's just going to happen I'm not going to grind and weld outside when I have a garage to work out of so I'd really like to come up with away to keep this to spaces separate when needed.

Thanks
Bill

My family's large metal shop uses roll up garage doors to seperate areas. The shop was built basically as 3 buildings put together. The doors are where the two side buildings attach to the center building. They are sized large enough to get vehicles/trailers through when needed. I know your building is not going to be as large, but a wide garage door would probably work well for what you want to do.

Thanks Guys.
Nice idea Foamer! I like it.
right now I'm think I'm going looking into finding some heavy duty fabric or canvas and come up with a curtain type system. I'm on a set budget that's getting pushed pretty thin as I'm trying to go as big as possible because I know I'll need the space. I'll keep you posted. Any other ideas are welcome.

Thanks

What do you have for printing equipment, can it be built into cabinets?
How much floor space do you think you need if the equipment remains setup?
How about putting the printing equipment in a loft area?

This is large format equipment, the printer is 98" long and about 400lbs, Laminator is about 650lbs. Everything will be on wheels and will be moveable but once it's setup I won't be wheeling it across the shop to get it out of the way.

I thought about a loft it's still an options but getting the equipment up there would be a PITA also I'd be using alot of 4x8 sheets of material and I'm not hauling that stuff up the stairs every time I get an order it.

I've toyed with the idea of dropping the foot print to 36'x30'x10 and adding a loft, it has it's pros and cons

Do you not want any space taken up when the wall is not in place? If 8' is too much how about making multiple smaller sliding doors?

Maybe even make them hinge over flat again the wall when not in use.

How about something from here: https://billboardtarps.com/all-products/
For a curtain system. New or recycled billboard vinyl in a wide assortment of thicknesses. Pricing seems pretty reasonable. My son and I had talked about using this product for his paint booth, but just ended up with standard blue tarp.
