I have 12' walls and just inherited a ton of tools from my friends father who passed and suddenly I was in need of a lot more space. I was considering doing some tall shelving too, but after sizing things up I went a different way. I built a small loft. Just 4x8, about 4' in height below and under 5' on top of the platform. So now a bunch of the big stuff gets tucked under the loft (welders, table saw, shop vac, etc). Then I built short staircase, steeper than code so it doesn't protrude into the space and a simple railing along the 8' opening. I put the blast cabinet, a plastic shelf, and a bunch of other stuff up there. I'll try and post some pics later.
