So I have a nice three stall garage about 1200 square feet but I have seen people add on a detached garage next to the main attached garage and it can look cool my main function is to get rid of all the **** in the garage i have the perfect back out pad on my driveway which I could extend. I need to do this on a budget since the wife isn't too keen on the idea. I can go back about a max of 22'. Was going to go down and check local building code to see any other regulations. Thanks for any ideas pictures etc. this is my first post been looking around on here for quite some time and very impressed with all the cool stuff on here.

Here is the shop I am building behind my drive through garage. My city's zoning says that no more than 25% of the lot can be covered with structure. With this addition I am at 24.7% which leaves enough wiggle room for a dog house.

It would help to know what the house looks like if you want to match things. As King says, check out the local regulations to see what you can do. The main issues are going to be maximum lot coverage, maximum size of a detached structure (could be worked around by connecting them with a breezeway or such), maximum height of detached structures, and I have seen areas that won't even allow a detached structure in some residential zones.

If all you need is storage for overflow junk from the main garage, consider doing what I did.

Several years ago I bought a storage container from a guy who had one in his back yard. It was 8 x 20 and cost me about $2200 including getting it moved by rollback to my back yard. What's nice about this one is the roll up door which is much easier to open and close than those heavy steel doors that open sideways. I had previously put in a concrete apron on that side of the garage. The container was already almost the same color as my garage so it fit into the desert decor perfectly.

Couple of years later I was once again looking for additional storage and came across an ad on Craigslist from a business that salvages semi trailers and sells the bodies. For $1350 delivered I got one that was 9 x 28, also with a roll up door. I didn't want a concrete apron on that side of the garage so I levelled the ground as best I could and put down a series of pressure treated 2 x 6s for it to sit on to keep the metal bottom off the dirt.

Would have cost me a lot more money to build something and would have probably given me grief with the building department and added to my tax base.

These are not considered buildings (here).

And they are wide enough to put a car into, but I use them for other stuff.

I have thought about doing the same thing for some inexpensive enclosed storage. At my last place, I paid a bit more for a 8 x 15 shed that meet code. I couldn't get a shipping container in there, but I think the place I am going to buy I will be able to.

My parents have a 2-1/2 car 24' deep attached garage, and then a 26x30 detached garage, Ill take pics next time I go over there, It was built with the house but basically the attached garage you come down the driveway and turn right into and the detached you keep going straight.

It has the same siding, shingles, trim, lights ect as the actual house

That is the first thing that you will have to do. Permits vary from town to town, state to state, and almost anymore from street to street. When we lived in town, we weren't allowed to take up any more than what the house footprint was. We were allowed though to build right up to the property line.

With the house we live in now (in the country), I was allowed to build as big as I wanted, but I had to leave an area as large as what my leach field was already because of possibly having to replace it in the future. I also had to stay 10' off of the property line between me and the neighbor, That was maybe 10 years ago. I would imagine that today things have tighter restrictions.

So it all boils down to City restrictions, County restrictions, and Township restrictions. Just make sure you check with the proper authorities on what you can and cannot do. And GET IT IN WRITING!!!! The reason I say that is when I built my garage, I showed plans to the Planning Commission in town. Everything was approved. I had to get with the Township though to get a Township permit. I showed them the plans and all was good. BUT.......we live on a County road. The County stopped after everything was done. I was supposed to have a driveway permit. WTF:willy_nil In our county today, I was informed, that you are only allowed one driveway entrance and egress. I had three. A circular drive in front of the house, and another drive from my detached garage. I could have been made to take it out, but after a long talk, he let it slide. I've since taken out the circular drive though.
