Looking for suggestions on garage door setup

Hey how’s it going guys, I recently bought a house with a 2 1/2 car garage that I’ll be redoing soon. I restore old cars and spend a lot of time in there. Right now the garage has two 9x7 doors, non insulated, on two overhead openers. My plan is two take the old doors off and use them on a barn in the back, and buy two new insulated doors (I’ll be insulating the inside of the garage and running heat and a/c). I’m on a budget, so originally I was looking at two cloplay insulated doors from Home Depot. To maximize headroom I wanted to use two chamberlain wall mount openers. Now the cloplay doors come with extension springs but they make a conversion kit to switch to torsion springs. However looking at the questions and answers section the manufacturer of the torsion spring conversion says that the kit will not work with wall mounted openers. So basically I’m looking for recommendations on a setup that will work together, to have an insulated 9x7 door with torsion springs so I can use a wall mounted opener. Thanks for your time!

I'd just go to HD or any other source and tell them what you want and get a quote. Your plan seems very common to me so I can't imagine it wouldn't be available from nearly every supplier.

I have the same setup in my garage and got the doors from HD. Start with Clopay first!!! The configurators (on their computers) in the store don't work well for what you want.

We went with plain commercial doors, but you CAN get the commercial track systems with the residential doors.

If you call Clopay customer service, they can help you configure what you need. Tell them that you want to buy through Home Depot and they will be able to assist. Then take all the specs for what you want into the store and make sure you are talking to one of the managers in the door section. They will need to call/work with Clopay to get the order done, (instead of clicking it away on their computer) but everything goes really well. (Home Depot's in-store purchasers have a manual touch on it anway once the folks on the floor get it entered.)

Once you have the door, just have your wife install it, as below. Easy! (Probably best to get the wife a taller ladder, though...)

Did your doors come with torsion springs or did you convert them? It’s crazy Iv been researching non stop and I cannot find an easy answer on who sells doors that are compatible with a wall mounted opener

This doesn't answer your question, but when I got my garage doors the price from a local installer was real close to the price that I could get the doors myself from Home Depot, it was worth the few dollars different to have the doors installed with a warrantee, their price for openers was slightly higher than I could get them for but they included installation. Might want to get quotes from a couple local places, they know what doors work with what openers.

So I'm a little confused on the headroom since the opener sits higher than the door when open and above the tracks?
Is this so that when the door is closed that space between the rails is open for a gantry crane or lift from the trusses?
Have you considered using your current openers mounted to the ceiling with an extended bar from the open to door? You could also mount the opener back from the wall if needed to get the right push/pull on the door.

I did something similar in a garage with 11' ceilings and 10' doors. I used a standard opener and standard door. The door was installed very close to the ceiling and the opener against the ceiling. I used a 2' extension on the opener to get 9' of lift. The opener was mounted back from the header to allow the door to open the full 10' with the connecting link unpinned from the door if needed. I only ever needed it once but it was there and easy to do. The budget was tight and the side openers were too much money at the time.

All those doors are available from the box store with whatever spring system you want. Ordered, no conversion. Here is the difference. Most of the box store doors come in two flat boxes. One with panels the other with the hardware. By ordering through a local dealer, you will get a pro-pack system where the track has all the flags on it and three bolts the horizontal and vertical are together. That feature alone is worth the difference in price, if any. It is also not uncommon to be a little light in some of the hardware. Good luck going back to the big box and getting help with that. Overall find a local dealer and give them a shot. You may be surprised.

Thanks for the recommendations guys, this is why I came to a forum! I will try to get in contact with a local installer and see how far off their pricing is. Also I liked sureshots idea, ever really though of that but yes having the overhead opened mounted high up on the ceiling would give me the extra space im looking for for using the quickjack and what not. The geometry of how the door opens requires it because the ends of the panels stick out past the rollers. The low headroom track options address this and get the track closer to the ceiling.

I just ordered doors from Lowes that had torsion springs. They were cheep and insulated. Worked with wall mounted opener. Also you can insulate the doors you have if you are on budget. I made one a high lift so the tracks would not get in the way of my lift. That is another story.

How often are you opening your OHD ? If only once a day or once a week consider this manual opener .

The garage door business IMHO is very competitive, that being said you can shop what ever vendors are available to you and select the one you want to give your business to.
I have bought a few garage door openers (GDO) from Home Depot and IMHO, a Geni opener is a Geni opener, but Home Depot, and I am sure other big box stores, use the lowest bidder to do the installations.

For that reason I use a trusted independent GDO service company for my few rentals.
Unless you are willing to do some homework, if you shop by price alone you will wind up with the shoddiest POS on the market.
