I've only been welding for about 5 years, but it seems more and more like a tig would see more use for me than a mig. I'll hold onto my mig, but I'd like to grab a tig as well.

Won't be welding anything heavy - 1/2 aluminum or anything that large - seems that most of my projects so far are 1/4 steel or less.

Any suggestions? I'd kinda like to stay in the <$1-1,200 range if possible.

Look into the Everlast line.

I have their 225LX and it's been a great machine. Now that I know more I kinda wish I got he 250 EX though. Not because of the extra amps but the features it has over the LX would be nice.

Inexpensive:
AHP AlphaTIG 200X 200 Amp IGBT AC DC Tig/Stick Welder with PULSE 110v 200v Sale: $680.00
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00REX6USW/?tag=atomicindus08-20

Slightly more:
Lincoln Square Wave TIG 200 TIG Welder $1,399.00
http://www.lincolnelectric.com/en-us/equipment/Pages/product.aspx?product=K5126-1(LincolnElectric)

I have the Square wave tig 175 transformer machine. It is built heavy and is a great machine with no frills. Kind of expensive though. I love mine.

If I were to buy another it would be the Square wave 200.

The Alpha tig gets some great reviews.

I also like Miller, but not in the same price range. Not adverse to any decent machine brand.

I'm a weekend welder as well. I purchased the Eastwood Tig 200 welder and have been VERY happy with it. Got it on sale around Christmas for $599 with free delivery. Comes with a 3 year warranty and I did have an issue with the gas hose and they replaced it without any issues or questions. The hose had come detached from the torch. The mailed me the entire torch and hose assembly since it's all one piece. Came with all new cups and rod clasps. Had it 3 days after i called. Consumables have been easy to replace with standards parts at my local Welding supply house. Cups, torch parts etc.

I have an Everlast 225LX. It welds nice but if it breaks again it goes in the dumpster. If I had to replace it it would be with a HTP Invertig 221.

Subscribed its on my want list

Wound up buying it from a guy on Welding Web. A little more than Amazon, but he runs each machine to verify its operating properly, he also supplies an upgraded flow meter and a gas lens kit, so it is kinda a wash. Plus, he's working very close with AHP, so if I have issues maybe he can support.

Southhpaw, Easy Tiger Sales.

I'd give you the links here, but I don't know the details about cross-posting here.

He basically sets each rig up and runs it. So you won't get a DOA unit. It's only ~$50 extra over Amazon, depending on whether your state lets them charge you tax. If they do, you're on par again.

Sorry to hijack, any one know if ahp welders can be bought in canada? I did a quick Google search and found a bunch of threads on various forums of Canadians getting stone walled when it comes to getting an alphatig across the border.

I don't know about AHP but everlast is in Burlington and you can even try the machine there he is very nice guy who runs the distribution.....plus if it blows up you don't have to ship anywhere just drive there

Yeah everlast is my other consideration. The plus is they are 25 minutes away, the con is they are still a fair bit more expensive than ahp and I haven't heard anyone being happy with their torch.

HTP can set up a nice torch for almost any brand Tig.
