Looking for Vise Info

I have this vise made by JET.

Other than the name JET on the side, there is no other information on the vise itself.

The spindle nut is broken. I'm looking to replace it but don't know where to start. My web search on "JET vises" leads me to the JET / Wilton website. But they no longer make vises or supply parts for vises.

I want to know:

1) If JET is an American vise or not?

2) Is someone making aftermarket parts for these?

3) Can someone identify this model?

4) Is it better to (if I can) buy / replace the spindle nut or scrap the vise and buy another?

What I know is that the swivel base is approximately a 9" diameter.

The vise jaws are approximately 6"

The vise is very heavy.

Someone welded the spindle nut.

It looks like a Morgan. Maybe someone who has one could check to see if the nut is the same as yours. The base of the nut seems rather distinctive.

If it turns out to be a Morgan you could check with the company to see if they have your part http://www.milwmal.com/v_mach.htm or take it to a machine shop for repair.

1: appears to be an American make
2: no
4: Depends on how much time you want to spend looking. You could get a similar vise for $100 or less if you like yard sales, auctions, flea markets or frequent Craigslist searching.

Thanks for your help so far.

This site already proved to be a great resource!

LOL, I came to the same conclusion and posted the same link in another thread where he asked that & posted pics... ;)

I just sent them an email with the same pics. Hopefully they're the manufacturer and still have those nuts available...

Just got an email back:

Hello
No, we never made JET vises, they are an import from Japan. JET is still in business, you should be able to Google them.
Ty

My problem is JET customer service said they don't make vises or parts for vises any more...

I sent an additional email to Morgan / Milwaukee tool stating that there Morgan vise is identical in contour and configuration, asking them if their spindle nut might work as a replacement for mine broken one.

I'm still looking for help with replacing this nut.

If anyone could help, I'd appreciate it...

Two different JET companies.

That vise clearly pre-dates the current JET, which is an import tool house.

It's likely that vise was made under contract by one of the bigger vise companies and someone decided JET was a cool "new" term in the early to mid fifties...

The jaws are distinctive, and I'm thinking Columbian? could be someone else. :dunno:

I think it looks identical to the Morgan! Comparing the lines and contour of each leads me to believe that they may have made it for another company long ago and put the name JET on it...

Ty from Milwaukee Tool is going to send me a vise nut for their 6 inch vise free of charge on the condition that if I get it to work I send them some money for it. Awesome for a company who has no interest in this project except to make someone happy!

I hope that works out for you because that's a stout looking vise, and welcome to the GJ! You'll find out these guys on here have some serious knowledge on vises!

Ok... you got me...

Call it insomnia, ADD, curiosity... Wait, what'd you call me?

I went down and took my Morgan #160 apart (your vises jaws better be 6"wide" and not "open" 6" , I felt like I was wrestling a bear in a sauna, and was losing... badly...)

Morgan Part #1106007 Cost $58.00
Phone Order Direct 414-645-0200

Anyway, here are some pics with measurements, if you have any questions, PM me...

Good Luck!

I am sweating profusely by the way... :lol_hitti

Are you sweating out of anticipation?

Thanks for the pics. And the heavy lifting. That's the part# he's sending me.

I'll put up some more pics this afternoon. Against a tape measure mine is slightly different...

I hope it fits, and I'm inclined to think it will...

Okay. I photo-ed the nut exactly like you photo-ed yours. The dimensions are not exact.

On a couple of yours the tape measure wasn't exactly on or you were measuring it differently for some reason.

Here they are:

I'm hoping that the foot of the nut and the thread pitch is dimensionally the same.

What do you think?

As long as:

1. The thread is the same
2. The height from the bottom of the base to center of the hole is the same

You should be in good shape. Worst thing is you might have to file the foot profile some to get it to fit in your channel.

That's what I'm thinking too...

Is that vise actually 6" wide jaws? Pull that swivel base off and cehck for any numbers underneath. Measurements of all pieces as well be would be nice. If that is a USA made vise from a previous Jet brand I believe it is the first one on here.

It is 6" jaws. Slightly over. I pulled the swivel base and took a piece of Scotch Brite every surface looking for any other marks at all.

Nothing. I'll check again and give some measurements.

No other markings. Nothing on the inside or bottom. The allen wrench I used to pulled the collar on the main screw was SAE not metric.

The jaws are just over 6"

The base is 8 1/2" diameter

The jaw depth is 4 1/2

Not sure what it opens to.

More pics with tape measure.

It may indeed be an early model Jet, and the first one posted here, do I get a prize? How about a new vise nut...

Here are a couple of pics. It’s a 6 inch vise, different than the jet vises today.

I think you should post pics of your vise so the rest of us can potentially offer information to you.
I posted a couple more. I am thinking it is made by Record.
