I'm putting sliding windows (60"x60") and doors (haven't decided on sliding or double french) into my current screened in porch to make it a 4 season room. Looking for a recommendation on a decent brand of builder grade windows. I don't need anything too nice, as it is not well insulated, but I don't want junk. Home Depot and Lowes are out of everything, so I have to order them sight unseen. FYI- No Menards near here. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

No local window and door sales places that arnt a big box store?

I have HD american craftsman windows. There about 9yrs old. One is glazed over but they all work very well. However at that same time i installed a fiberglass entry door. Year 1 the bottom seal broke and ripped out. Year 3 the thing is so bowed out from the lock it almost dosnt seal. Its bowed 1/4in across a 6ft level. I'm changing it out for a better brand from a local supply house in april (when it comes)

I like Anderson mainly based on some repairs and upgrades we did 2 houses ago. At the time the house was 15 yrs old and somehow the window in the bath cracked the inner layer of glass. I called Anderson and was able to order a new window pane. It was white wood on the outside and cleared wood on the inside and I was surprised that I could get an exact duplicate. I also learned about the low e glass that helps reduce heat from coming in from the sun. One bedroom had been a real pain for those 15 yrs as it was on the west side so got full on sun from noon until it set. Talked to Anderson again and got exact duplicates except they had the new type glass.

What is surprising is the vast number of window manufacturers out there. Some though are simply sales outlets for other manufacturers. I bought three windows from Wisconsin Windows, which were actually inset/renewable types, not a full window frame replacement. Their big deal is a "lifetime transferrable warranty" which I think is more marketing than quality. Personally I would not buy them again.

I installed two aluminum clad Jeldwen windows I bought through Home Depot way back in 2003. I have two similar windows to replace on the lower level of the house and I'll likely go with Jeldwen again.

Figure out what the local window companies use. The last thing you want to do is use a manufacturer that has no support or presence in your area.

When I replaced my windows I got builders grade Jeld-Wen. It was about $4000 (2012 prices) for twelve low-E windows and a sliding door. Did the work myself with help from a friend for the second story. Conventional flange-mount vinyl. They have been fine and were a major improvement.

The main reason for going lower-end is that in our area it's just not worth putting a lot of money into your property. The average home buyer just wants windows that work and doesn't care about the brand.

my Jeld-Wen vinyl were all from the Big Orange Box store, except the front that was a custom size. That was in 2004 and they are all holding up really well. I'd do it again in a heart beat.

If you live where the temperatures gets near or below freezing, double glaze windows will not be enough. You will need additional heat.

How much cold do you get and how much use do you expect to see in the winter. Triple pane is over kill if the rest isn't well insulated. It's really a toss up, triple pane can hold more heat but double pane can heat from the sun better which is better in winter but worse in the summer.

Anderson is just a shadow of its former self as far as quality and customer service but they’re still the best value out there in My opinion.
