About to do a small trenching project and don’t necessarily want to buy these. Anyone have some I can borrow?

Less than $100 investment for tools that will last a homeowner their lifetime. I'd just buy them. Everyone needs a set of post hole diggers

These should do the job and you probably will never wear them out. For a tamper, saw off a small sapling 2-3 inches dia. at the base and cut it off about 5 feet long. use the small end to pack close to the post, large end to do most of the packing. A piece of 2 inch iron pipe with a plug welded on the end would be better, with a smaller piece of
3/4 pipe welded on the other end. Close to the coast you should have sandy soil which is easy to dig in. For the red clay we have here, sometimes in dry weather I would start a hole, then fill it with water and let it sit overnight to make the soil loose and damp.

could always find a used one on craigslist cheap and just toss it back up for what you paid for it or even more if you find a deal!

That would be like 45 bucks invested. More time spent searching than money

you have three Home Depots and three Sunbelt Rentals in Chesapeake. They should be able to rent you what you need.

I agree - cheapeast post hole digger and tamper in Home Depot are about $25 each. About $45 for a better digger.. so figure $60 - $75 all in. I guess its just a matter of what your time is worth to drive twice to pick them up and then return them if you borrow, opposed to ordering online and getting free shipping. Up to you, but IMO its just not worth the effort. Not sure a post hole digger is the best option for a trench - but only you are gonna be the best judge for that... if its a small narrow trench, HD does sell trenching shovels.

As stated, its not a big investment for something you may wind up using down the road.
