Hang out at the Home Depot in the morning and watch what contractor loads blocks and mortar. Get a card, check references. There are so many small masonry contractors down there it's scary. Be sure to get everything in writing. That will weed out half the rif raf. If you want a reputable contractor, check with the block suppliers. They usually have a few cards on their counter of guys who use them regularly. Good luck.

I think rather than Home Depot I would see if there is a local Brick and Block yard where real contractors buy their materials. Go there and ask for some references.

A while back in the thread "Wet garage raise" the author complained of Menards (a regional Big Box) block as being flimsy and cracking easily. In my garage build, I just put up a 3 course, 2' knee wall and used block from a local yard. 210 8" block and I couldn't get one to crack with a sledge. In fact I had to cut a few. Had a dozen extra left overs I took back and told the dispatcher to keep them as they'd be in my way but I did need a yard of sand. He says that'll be an even swap as he hopped on the loader and poured a very generous yard on my trailer.
Pretty sure that wouldn't happen at Home Depot.

Having inspected hundreds of buildings in NY, I never saw block work as sloppy as they do in FL. They do not strike joints and the finished product looks like **** with gaps, crooked lines, blobs of mortar, etc. That work would never do in NY. My brother moved to FL and did his own block work on an addition to his house. The inspector took one look and said, "You didn't learn to lay blocks in FL." It was straight and every joint was struck perfectly. In FL, they throw it together then stucco over the outside. The inside, if it is an unfinished garage, looks like ****. I have a place in FL and the inside of the garage block walls has terrible workmanship.

I told the guy at the concrete products place he sold me the wrong block, I wanted lighter old man block not heavy young man block.
