Hi everyone.

Had a Stihl 440 chainsaw once. Looking to replace it with something now. This was a great German made saw, are they still made there?

Does Husky make anything comparable? What about dollar?

Looking for a nice saw capable of cutting hardwood all day.

Any input is appreciated.
Thanks!

I believe every Stihl product is made in VA Beach now. They are still the top tier they have always been. They still sell, only, through their dealer network.

If I were to buy a saw today, I would certainly check Stihl. I have one saw I bought in 1984 that works as well as new. I have a new battery powered unit that is awesome for the 30-45 minutes it works, before charging and no pull start, fuel and so on. Reasonably priced as well. Is great for those who make a few cuts or trimming.

bests.

I believe that all saws 441 and up in the pro lineup are still German made. The ones that are german made are easy to tell as they have a large made In germany sticker on the front of the saw below the muffler.
The 441 would be an equivalent saw to your 440, and while pricey my honest opinion is that for a pro saw Stihls quality is unmatched.

in the 441 you can spend a few more bucks and get M-tronic. That is an electronic controlled carb, no air fuel adjustments ever again.

M-tronic is worth it, the performance is amazing the saws are not effected by altitude or tempature and the acceleration is lightning fast.

Stihl makes very good Pro model saws, they are a step or two above than their homeowner models. Like most things, you will pay more for a quality product. The M-Tronic is nice improvement to the saws.

Sorry guys but I'm not a player on computer controlled chainsaws. M-Tronic saws have computer control carbs and require a scan tool to service. I deal with that **** all day on cars, I'm not gonna deal with a damn chainsaw with a check engine light lol.

I recommend an MS-461. NO m-tronic carb and screams through wood like a raped banchee. The non m-tronic saws run great and are still tunable. Here's mine puttin' the wood in the shed!

I'm going to suggest my favorite, which is Dolmar. The PS-7910 is the closest in Dolmar's lineup to the Stihl MS-461, and it will come down to a matter of price and how it feels in your hands. I'm not a fanboy, but I dumped my Stihls in favor of Dolmars a few years ago and have not regretted it one bit. For me, I found them more comfortable to use, easier to start and more reliable. Dolmar is a brand now owned by Makita, so you may start finding red saws branded Makita instead of Dolmar - they are one and the same. I think they are phasing out the blue Makita saws.

Hi guys. Thanks for the input. Reding these opinions by guys like you direct my purchases.

I remember as a kid my dad had a Sachs Dolmer. Then I never saw them again. Revived?

Are the high end Huskys made in Sweden?

Check Craig's list or the for sale section on www.arboristsite. You should be able to buy a used 440 or 460 for half of what they cost new. I went old school and bought a fixer upper ms046 to keep my ms361 and me 250 company.

Buddy of mine has a Dolmar saw. It's an older one but he says it runs just fine. I don't know about getting parts for them.

To answer an earlier question the higher up models in Stihl's lineup are made in Germany. My MS 461 is as well. I'm lucky to have a really good local dealer with guys that know their products and a parts department that goes the extra mile. That also plays in my overall desicion to go Stihl on all my 2 stroke equipment.

Check eBay, usually some nice vintage saws on there in amazing condition. There are collectors of everything. I have a Stihl 045AV that is a awesome saw and was typically a landing saw around here. My little Stihil 009 only 25 years old and never any issues.

Home Depot rents those Makita Dolmar saws in a couple different sizes. From time to time they will sell saws from their rental inventory for a good price. I cut with a couple guys who have bought a used rental, looked and performed like new.

I used to do tree service and used just about every model between Husky and Stihl. From bucket saws to 3120xp and ms660 with 36-42" bars. Imo the two best saws were the Stihl 361 and 441. Right now I use an Echo bucket saw and a Stihl 441. The other 5-6 saws I have just sit because there isn't anything I can't do with those two saws.

An Echo CS-400 or CS-450 with minor muffler mod (core out cat) and tune will run with a number of 50cc saws. They will do it in a lighter package that's more comfortable to use all day. 16"-18" bar.

For chain saws I prefer Stihl over Husky. I had the 260, 460, 660, and the pole pruner. Never had a problem with them. The Husky spent most of its time either breaking or not running.

As I have stated earlier M-Tronic is excellent. I know some people are skeptical but I think is strikes the perfect balance, a old fashion diaphragm carb that can be rebuilt as usual with a computer actuated solenoid valve to adjust the mixture, also because it still has a basic carb you don't necessarily need a computer to work on the system. All the computer does is tell you the hours and run basic diagnostics.
