I wouldn't buy an air tool in a clamshell package; that just looks cheezy as hell.

I'd be more willing to accept it as new vs. one in no packaging appearing as new. That packaging gets destroyed when opened.

I worked for many years for a tech company that sold some products retail. Thermoforms (clamshells) are much cheaper to produce than real cardboard boxes and provided a higher level of protection from counterfeiting. However, our research showed that customers did not feel comfortable buying a $200-$1000 product out of a plastic thermoform. Like you said, it looks cheesy as hell. People in Asia were particularly offended by purchasing a high dollar product in a clamshell dangling off of a metal hanger. You are probably paying 50 cents to a dollar extra to get it in a box instead of the clamshell.

The seller responded w the following:
"The part number is AG14AH/AG14. The Angle head is AG14AH and straight one is AG14."

This kinda sorta appears on the level. He responded quickly. Both item #'s can be found on Mac's website and look similar if not identical.

In fact the Mac website refers to these as "standard duty" grinders, which is also terminology used by IR. I wonder if IR doesn't make these for MAC? Of course all silver die grinders look the same....

This set was a recent two for one special. It was listed in one of Macs monthly flyers and may not be in the catalog or on the website. The plastic packaging probably protects the tools from moisture as they journey here from China.

Don't be so sure. I've got a drawer full of HF die grinders, too. They're ok, but they're also disposable. I've also got some quality grinders. They work better, don't feel disposable, and use less air. Cheap air tools are air hogs.

we have a huge pile of dead IR air tools at work and the central pnuematics they bought (our job is based on a budget with the supervisor getting a kick back as to what is left, so he's the cheapest dude you'll ever meet) and the centrals have worked twice as long as the IR's.. i think its a matter more of how you take care of it, verses the name on it.
