It's currently on CL and would love to have it. I think the price is right but am very uneducated on vintage tools. There is no way this close to Christmas I can buy this thing unless I can convince the wife to get it for me. I already have a crappy bench top Crapsman press that pisses me off every time I use it, but she can't understand those kind of things. So whatcha think? worth $150 in good working condition? Are these good pieces of equipment by today's $300 drill press standards? I would much rather spend my money on a quality vintage tool that will be usable and serviceable for many more years than by the cheap **** out there today.

I'm No expert on these machines. I would say for 150 bucks you better go get it. Soon. Or it will be gone.

What makes you think the paint is not original? I only ask due to ignorance. I was hoping to get some feedback here on this model of machine. There was not enough info on the listing to do research. awaiting a text reply on more info.
Another question. What is the drum looking thing coming off the bottom of the motor? Maybe a aux. sanding drum for deburring?

Back in the day the Delta name stood for very fine woodworking machines, if you bought it for $150.00 dollars that drill press will outlast you, your wife, your children and their children. The price is very fair if you don't like the color just repaint it but the longer you sit on the fence the shorter your time frame will be to buy it.

All the handles are painted. Motor is painted. Can't tell if part of the post is painted just below the belt gaurd. Can't tell but is that a weld line on the belt cover in the side-view picture?
The drum is probably a leather belt pully.

Leather belt pulley for other accessories?

Anyone know the original Delta color? I always thought is was blue. I like the retro colors my self, especially if it is the metallic blue. I can't tell from the pics. I sent a text. Still waiting to hear.

Thanks

I looked on Google and see them in everything from metallic green, Dark blue, the color blue that this one is, and gray. I don't see, however, any of them that has the belt cover. It's all exposed. For looks maybe?

I see what looks to be a machine number on the base of it. That and the painting would make me think it came out of a factory or shop of some kind. Which isn't always a bad thing as long as they took care of it. But some shops don't take care of machines and run them till they die and then sell them. Have to look a little closer at it and see how it runs and sounds. It's a very nice drill if it's in good condition.

The guy still has it. He said another guy is coming out in an hour to look at it. It was a surplus at the company he works for. He bought two and is selling one. He knows nothing else about it other than it works good and was used until the day it got replaced. We will see this afternoon if it's still for sale I guess. I figure if everything is tight and the motor sounds good, it's worth at least $100.

Don't see a start cap on the motor, probably 3 phase. Not a bad press, but the next size up - 17", is far more desirable, as they are beefier, have crank lift tables, better speed range, and sometimes MT spindles. What do you plan to use it for, wood, light metal work or heavier metal work? Probably spins too fast for any bits larger than 3/8" in steel, at least as it sits.

It would be used for wood and steel. He said it has multiple pulleys for speed changes. I would like the crank lift table fo-sho!

Who cares if its been reprainted. If I'm not mistaken that's a Delta DP-200 which is one of the most reliable workhorses they made back then. Tons of parts available for them also. You can see some awesome restorations of those over on OWWM. Personally, I'd try and get it for lower than $150 and put a few $$$ and effort into restoring it. It will outlast you.

As stated it "might" be 3 phase which would require a VFD. I can't tell in the pic.

A few things point to the history of this DP: 1) He got it from surplus, with another one; 2) Its got some numbers painted on the base, which may have indicated its use or location in a production environment; 3) Its got the look that says, "Hey, here's a bucket of paint.....It's time to give the tools their annual coating of paint."

Probably came from a production environment. Do the standard check for play and runout. If all checks out, pick it up.

I'll bet the other guy went ahead and bought it, though.

and this^^^^ has me leary. If the guy today didn't buy it and it has been listed before, there is a reason. Stuff like this doesn't just sit on CL without a reason. He didn't call me back today indicating that it should have sold. But I may call him tomorrow. It's over an hour drive for me, and I have been burned by other peoples impression of "good" which was in reality a huge piece of S#!+ from CL. I don't want to waste my precious petrol.

That's a good drill press. I have the exact same one, sans the cover on top.

For $100-150, if it's in good working order, that's a fair deal. I paid $100 for mine.

Miluwakee made the machines before they changed to Delta. I have had many old machines and the colors has changed over the years. $150 is steep but it is well worth it. I would not pay more. I buy for much less.

Is it just me, or does the chuck look bent in the left pic?

Most were a medium gray color that I have seen. Check the spring that recoils the quill back up. I have one that the spring is broke and I can't find another. Its a pain to use. If is 3 phase, you'll have the exspense of a different motor. I know the feeling about driving to a cl add, been there, done that.

Well I missed out on that drill, it was gone by the end of the day. And then the next day another one came up. I called and offered $150 and he laughed at me. he said he was at that moment stripping the paint on it and repainting it. I said ok, good luck. Shortly after he pulled the ad. Fast forward a couple days and it popped up again. http://tulsa.craigslist.org/tls/3482155792.html This time with brand new paint. I called him with in 20 min of him posting it the second time. (I check CL about 5 times a day for drill presses with VERY little change.) Knowing that he laughed at me for $150, I right off offered $250. He laughed at me again and said he just had an offer of $450. I said, take it. and just hung up. WTF? You guys are saying these things are barely worth $150 and they obviously sell around here for much more than that. I don't get it.

Edit: I just sold my rinky dink 3 spd 1/3 hp 8" Crapsman press for $100 with the table.
photo_zps1481aa06.jpg

Now my "want" of a press just turned into a "need" It has suddenly become very tempting to buy a brand new Porter Cable from Lowes for $300.
