On Wednesday I lost my lab belle. She was a great friend to my whole family. It still tears me up now. So instead of a pity party I thought we could celebrate our mutts or other lovely animals. Tell me about yours and maybe a little story. Belle is a black lab and loved to swim. She was like a kid at the lake jump in swim to the boat only to turn right back around and do it all over again. She would even go down the slide of our houseboat. I'll miss her!!!! God speed Belle!!!!!

Sorry for your loss. I guess the only upside to not growing up without a dog is you never had to put one down.

We have a australian shepard mix, Charlie. He hates squirels but loves everyone else. This is his serious face. Its going to be a hard day when he leaves us. Hopefully that will be many many years down the road. I never knew how much personality dogs had until we got him. Always loved dogs but never could get one till I was on my own (well married since someone has to take care of me).

Sorry for you loss. I have 5 cats, but 1, Pixie, is my assistant (that's her as my avatar). Any time I do repairs around the house she has to "supervise". Sometimes this is just her watching, other times it involves her taking off with tools (screwdrivers are her favorites). I've lost pets before, but when she goes I know it's going to be especially hard. They are with us what seems a short time to us, but their memories stay with us forever!

I know our Katie-girl is on 'bonus time' right now. She survived liver cancer three years ago but had two new unrelated spots earlier this year. Paladia was effective in stopping the advancement of the tumors; but Katie has had some hip/spine issues recently. We're off chemo for now and will consider options later this summer. On many days, she acts like nothing is wrong except advancing age(hers and MINE!). She's 11.5 and that's getting up there for a Scottie nowadays.

Katie was a therapy dog back in Atlanta, visiting nursing homes, children's hospitals, re-hab centers, etc. We feel she earned some karma points during those years and shared more happiness than many critters ever experience. We're enjoying every day we have with her and love to see the smiles of children and adults when they see her prancing down the walk.

I'm sad for your loss...nothing fair about it...but we can remember the good times and the joy our critters bring to us lowly humans.

Adios, Belle

This is my mini-aussie shepherd Hobbes (as in Calvin and Hobbes). He is perpetually at my feet but doesn't care for my air compressor or impact driver sounds so he lays outside my shop door while I'm working.
One of his quirks is that he thoroughly enjoys removing the stuffing from any stuffed toys he is given. My wife likes to get the ones they sell at a department store called Kohls. These stuffed animals are usually sold for a charity benefit. My wife likes to tell the cashiers that the toys will last about 5 minutes before they are shredded by Hobbes...the look of horror on the cashier's face is usually worth it.:D

Sorry for your loss. Sounds like she was a great dog! Labs seem to just enjoy life to the fullest. I've got two dogs - a 6 year old yellow lab (Max) and a 2 year old Walker Hound (Sadie). Both of them are rescues, and they live like royalty! We almost lost Max a couple of years ago due to a bag of tainted food, and I am not ashamed to say that seeing him suffering like that was very upsetting to the point that tears were flowing. We have a great vet and he was able to save him. Here are a couple of pictures.........

I'm sorry for your loss. Losing a pet is truly losing a family member.

Our dog Miley doesn't spend a ton of time in my shop but when the wife is gone and I'm down there she will hang out. Sometimes she will lay down beside me under a car and hang out while I work. On a few occasions she has been known to take the wrench I need next (no idea how the hell she knows) and take it over to her bed in the garage and lay down with it; forcing me to get out from under the car, get up, go get it, get back down and roll back under the car. Spoiled little dog.

She also stole my badge off the table one day so I clipped it to her collar and made her Detective Dog

Sorry for the pain you're going through.

This is our dog: Asta
View media item 31778She'll be 13 this October so I know what's in store over the next few years; but knowing that won't make it **** any less when it comes.
She's a Labra-desian (the official-un-official designation of a Labrador Retriever and Rhodesian Ridgeback mix). We rescued her from the county shelter in Downey, CA (not a fun place for any animal) when she was just over 6 months old.
View media item 31779This was her about 5 years ago with her pal Yodi on a playdate. (We sadly learned of his passing about 2 months ago).
View media item 31780She's been a great companion and friend; gentle as a butterfly and loves people. Hates squirrels and racoons (who doesn't?), quiet and only barks when it's really important. I'm sure she'd be much happier running around a field or farm somewhere, but then again what dog wouldn't. I'm glad she's in our lives, for however brief a time it is. She has made us better people.

Lost my black Chow Chow Chinabear after 16 yrs. Missed her so much after 5 months that I contacted breeders all over the Southeast and found another black Chow chow and it made it so much easier. It's like she is still with me. Get another, makes it so much easier.

Sorry to hear of your loss. I lost my Chocolate lab Karma, back in 2006. She was the best companion I've ever had. If I was out working on anything she had to be there with me. She was always close to me no matter where in the house I was. I have since gotten two Chessie/Chocolate lab mix Ace and Coco. They are good dogs, Ace is like the Baby Huey of the dog world, but he is such a lovable boy. Coco is a pleasure to have around. They both will come and check on me while I'm in the garage. Sometimes they will even hang out for a bit. Otherwise they are chasing the squirrells off of our property.

This is Ace. At 110 lbs it is a little difficult to get work done when he sticks big head in the way to get an ear scratch.

And here is Coco. And at 100lbs she is no push over either. And they tend to come at ya, at the same time.

This is Pilo (pronounced Peeeee-low). Christmas before last he bit my (running) chainsaw and spent the day in surgery. Respects the chainsaw now but like all Border Collies he's fascinated with dangerous spinning things. Loves to come out on the back of the truck collecting firewood or down to the rifle range.
Sending from a not-so-smart phone. If there's a picture, it's possibly upside down! I DO live in the Southern Hemisphere...

Here is a pic of my old buddy Zora. We lost him last year and I still miss him. He was at my side every moment and a great companion to my family. He would only leave me to look after the kids when they needed some extra supervision.

We couldn't make it a week without a dog. We decided we needed something completely different even though I'm a "big dog" lover. Miley is a mini-aussie and great in her own way. Zora just needed a pat on the head and a tennis ball. Miley requires a conversation and a game of chess followed up with some frisbee. Here she is enjoying the beach on our recent vacation.

We will be adding a playmate for her soon...an irish setter.

Very sorry to hear about your buddy here are mine Harley and Boxter we lost Boxter to a bad veterinarian who gave him some bad medicine when he was sick about a week after this pic was taken. The little one Boxter was fearless and could run with the big dogs and never backed down. I miss him as you miss your buddy as well. My heart goes out to you and your family

That day is soon approaching our household as well..My Best partner since I was 20 is 13 going on 14 and I hate the thought that such a friend will not be here forever... Shes been through college, hiked oregon and washington of the PCT, countless camping and boat journeys, and is the best guard and babysitter for my 1 year old daughter...

Sorry the time came for your friend and I hope you get another one to share the next decade with soon...

13 year old Texas Heeler

My condolences, they really don't stay with us long enough do they! I have a golden named Chili. He'll be 3 next month. I had hoped to train him to be a therapy dog and we were well on our way (you cant help but to smile when you see a happy golden). We almost lost him last year due to a few serious conditions, but by some miracle he turned around and slowly improved over the next 6 months. We spend 5 hours a day giving him food and water, but he's back to weight and you wouldn't know how sick he is unless i told you. Everyday with him is a gift, and at any time he could turn around and find himself where he was a year ago. That said, some days he's a royal PITA. Couple weeks ago he decided it would be prudent to swallow a tennis ball. An hour later, the vet got it out and he and the vet are no longer BFF's. He's got a Swiss watch in his brain. He tells us when it's meal time. He doesn't particularly care for my antics in the garage, except when I clear everything out. It serves as his playroom, so when it's empty, he stares at me and looks over at his toys..."can we, can we? Can we play now?". He lives for three things in life, food, going outside and play time, but a good nap is a distant favorite when nothing else is brewing. My favorite part of the day is the morning. He's bright, happy, acts like he hasn't seen you for a week and ready to start his day! There is something contagious about his outlook on a new day! I don't look forward to the day he leaves us.

Sorry to hear about your best friend.

I lost my previous dog on my birthday, and it was quite tough. But on the bright side, I just rescued a Catahoula which my brother-in-law is spoiling like the child he never had!

Sorry for your loss, its a tough time.

We had to get our 13 year old Aussie Bulldog Mortimer put down last sunday due to stomach cancer, my wife had him since he was a pup. He's the brindle and white dog, he had more personality than most people I meet.

The staffy is Bolt, we bought him about 4 months ago to keep mortimer company because he ran away. He's about 7 months old now and learning really quickly, with a little more training he will be a great shop dog.

Sorry for your loss, I lost several dogs as a kid and they are never fun to have to part with. I now have a Lab Basset mix named Soot. She is 4 years old now and I have had her since she was 8 weeks. Her first day with me she rode shotgun in the truck back from IL to MD. She goes everywhere she can with me, sometimes even to work for the day.

Here she is a few months after I got her helping me work on a trailer.

Sorry for your loss. Tough decision to put them down.
We put Gus down about a week ago- a 80 lb 13 yr old black Lab.
Hardest thing I ever did.
Thankfully we have another that's a Lab mix, but she's 10 now & slowing down. :(
