I was at Lowe's yesterday picking up a couple impact sockets, and I cruised a bit and looked at everything. A lot of stuff there was reduced in price recently, quite a bit was by 50%! Bits, jigsaw blades, that kind of stuff.

I also noticed their stubby wrench set was normally $25 I think, was reduced to $9.99 for either SAE or Metric.

These were the ones made in Taiwan, but I thought I'd pass it along.

Yeah I work there, and the 9pc metric stubby wrench set is usually around $29.98, is down to $9.98, and honestly it's considerable better than HF's and all around awesome quality, and highly polished. Thinking about picking them up, the deal will be around for a while for sure.

Definitely a great deal, even better as a stocking stuffer.

The stubby set looked nice. I am still thinking about picking them up, though I don't really think I have a use for them LOL.

I was really surprised at how much stuff was 50% off, though!

:headscratThe stubbies at my Lowes are still regular price.

Check the "boxes" where they are displaying the christmas gifts near the entrance. I found both metric and SAE in a box marked "gifts under $10" or something along those lines. The same stubbies in the tool section were still regular price $24.99.

Just grabbed a set of the stubbies while I was buying some other supplies. These are my first Taiwan Kobalt tools. They look fine, but it really opened my eyes to how much markup they have on these new tools (regular price tag was 24.99).

After reading this thread....I went back to Lowes and got both sets of stubbys. One set was in a display where the gift type stuff is....the other on the end of an isle in the tool department.

I think I bought the first out of each display. Great deal...the wrenches on their own were $6 - $8 each.

Thanks for the heads-up on these. I actually needed one the other day. (Now to search out that inspection camera)

I had the metric stubbies in my hand, but put them back when I saw the sizes. It started at 12mm and went to 17mm. I rely wold like it to start at 8mm orcat least 10mm. I routinely use 8, 10, 14,15, 18, & 19mm wrenches so I figured I would hold out for a different set.

FWIW, when I looked at the sizes in the sets I bought...compared to what was available loose...only 1 (and I think it was a bigger metric than is in the set). As I see it, you get all but one of the Kobalt stubbies in these two kits combined.

Sounds like a great deal. I don't have any stubby wrenches in my toolbox, I'll have to go get a set of each to have in there just in case. Thanks for the heads up.

I picked up a set of the metric stubbies. I couldn't resist. I am so weak.
You can add the 18 and 19 mm individual wrenches for another $15 NOTT!!!:wtf:
I can't believe that they don't offer a 10mm stubby wrench though. Most of today's cars are held together with bolts having a 10mm head.:scared:

DeWalt and Bosch were reduced price. I think maybe some DeWalt drill bits, too. Not 50% I don't think (though maybe one of the DeWalt sets was).

I think Lowe's is fixing to cheapen the Kobalt line again. I was there on Saturday and alot of Taiwan tools hadn't been restocked in awhile. They now have a big display of Chicom spline drive wrenches and sockets. The finish on them is nice but design wise they're very close to the cheapo Advance Auto Parts house brand.

I bought 2 of the 1/4" sets (one for a gift) and a set of the metric stubbys. I have been wanting / needing the stubbys for school, and $9.97 was the right price.

It wouldn't surprise me if the whole Kobalt line doesn't get repriced - they are probably 50% overpriced as it is. If they came down, they would be a good value. At regular prices, no way. I'll by Craftsman.

And Craftsman Taiwan is different than Kobalt Taiwan in what way? Plus the fact that there are a ton more Lowes than Sears.

I won't argue most stuff is overpriced though.

The one thing I'm noticing after buying a couple Kobalt sets is that the expandability is very slim. There are very limited selections of anything other than your basic wrench... i.e. no torque wrench, I don't believe I even saw a breaker bar but I must be wrong, no swivel sockets (Which I needed right away, of course.), etc.

Keep that in mind before you make a somewhat significant investment or settle on Kobalt. I really like the tools, and the sale prices are good, just need more selection.

Also, keep in mind we have no idea what they will do with the line down the road. I like the Taiwan tools, but I also would have been pissed if I specifically bought the US versions and then they started warrantying them with Taiwan-made. If the Taiwan tools get swapped out for a cheap China replacement, I'll be pissed. :p

As of today, a majority of Craftsman wrenches, sockets, and ratchets are still USA.

But agree, Taiwan vs Taiwan would be a draw. I do like the Kobalt stuff a lot.

I'm not sure I see why this is a problem. I have a wide variety of brands of tools for various reasons. To use an example from this thread, I bought the metric stubbies from Lowes. I also have stubbies from Craftsman in sizes that weren't available in the set from Lowes.

The inside of that little ratchet looks identical to the Harbor Freight/Pittsburgh polymer ratchet. From the "ratchet shootout" on the board here, they are rather weak (3/8" broke well before most brands). HOWEVER, they have a very nice ratchet action. I have one in 1/4", and like it a lot!

This is about right. At greatly reduced prices, I like the Kobalt value. Full retail? No way. FWIW, I like the new Taiwanese Kobalt much better than the most recent version of Kobalt USA stuff.

I was in the Gadsden, AL Lowe's today for a kitchen faucet and after reading the GJ this AM I checked on the "Stubby Sets" on sale. I got a set of SAE for $9.98; they didn't have the metric set. I may check it out in another town this weekend. They look good for a backup box but may not need to be kept under lock n' key.

Picked up both stubby sets and the 1/4" ratchet set today.

I really wish the stubby set had a 10mm. Didn't find a matching 10mm in the store, either.

The ratchet included with the 1/4" set is a 4 3/4" length ratchet. These aren't sold individually. They have a 5" long 1/4" drive, but not a 4 3/4".

...and we got our 10% military discount. :bounce:

I think I'm going to get the set just for the ratchet. I like my HF one, but would rather it have a Snap-On-Ish handle. Seems like an OK deal, but I don't need the sockets or the box.
