Hi Guys, I like to look of the light from the canapy of the local gas station. It bright and seen to show true colors. Has anyone used the low canapy lights in their garage? My garage is 22x24 with 12 foot high ceilings. I should be able to cover the whole garage with 2 fixtures...right?
Thanks

I am not sure if its a metal halide or what, but its a very "white" light, very bright, I do know they are referred to as "low canopy" lights. They also have "high Canopy" lights for a taller placement. Thanks

I've got metal halide low-bays in my shop: really good light for the most part: can get a little "shadowy" over by the walls. I've got 2-400w lowbays in a 30x40. I've never heard it called "low canopy", but that may be a regional difference: here there's highbays and lowbays: lows are good for about 20' and lower ceiling height, highbays go above that: hang a highbay too low and you're asking for a sunburn. Quite literally. different reflector shape.

He is referring to the canopy lights used at service stations/convenience stores. The ones mounted under the gas pump canopies that put out so much glare/light. It is known as the sparkle factor and many big gas stations have, over the past ten years increased the number of canopy lights to the point that some cities are now regulating them as to how much light can leave the property.

These lights are designed for use in damp locations, and are available in a number of different wattages from about 175w up to 400w or more.

For something no larger than a 22x24, I would suggest several 4 ft T8's with 5K or 6K bulbs. Several of these fixtures will give you much more even lighting than a couple of canopy lights in a building this small. Given something higher and larger, MH lights work OK but are quickly becoming obsolete. I have 12 ea 400w low bay MH lights in my 60x60 metal building, but someday in the future they may well get changed out to something more energy efficient. I used MH lights because I liked them and I got a decent price on used fixtures ($40 ea), but they hog the electricity, I figure it costs about a dollar an hour to turn them all on.

Here is the thread about my lighting, scroll thru it to find pics of the lighting installed.

I think even lighting is the key here. I don't think you would be happy with the metal hallides at 12 ft. You would likely have more than enough lighting right under them, but not enough as you walk away from the light. I would think that t8's would be just the thing and make you much happier. For more light, install more of them.
