Low Profile Mini Fuse

So my oldest Son's 2012 F-150 truck wouldn't start Saturday and it would crank but not fire. So on his era truck it's common for that to happen so I told him to replace the 20 amp fuse ,#27 which is for the fuel pump and since he didn't have another one I told him to rob another 20 amp like fuse, which was for traction control and sure enough the Truck started.
So when they came over for Sunday dinner yesterday, I gave him a selection of Mini Fuses that I thought would work for him and he called me this morning saying that the Mini Fuse didn't fit. So as We Discovered it Takes a "Low Profile Mini Fuse" ! Once again I learned something else!
Told Him to take his wife's car and run up to the Auto parts store and grab a small selection of Low Profile Mini Fuses to keep in the glove box! It never ends!

Dang, now there is a 'low profile' mini fuse. Heck the original mini fuse was bad enough. So many times I had to use a plastic fuse puller to install them. Just too small when trying to get them back into a fuse panel in the kick panels or under the dash. Well I guess they shaved 6 ounces and 29cents off of a 4000# $40,000 vehicle so we should be happy right?

Exactly! When my son first called me he said that the bad fuse didn't want to come out easily with the plastic fuse tool so I had him disconnect the ground at the battery and use a small set of needle nose pliers and he was able to remove the old burnt fuse. I agree the plastic fuse tool is handy most of the time but sometimes we need to use other measures. I saved an older plastic longer stronger tool in my master fuse kit where I have what I thought was all kinds of Auto fuses but now I discovered this "Low Profile Mini Fuse" and will add that to the kit! I guess the thing that threw me was his Truck being a 2012 and my F-150 being a 2019 and my wife's Explorer being a 2018 both use The normal Mini Fuses.

If I had to guess, it was probably to allow physically smaller fuse panels to be designed to allow more electronics to be packed into the same space. Similar to Apple designing a proprietary power connector to allow them to make their phones thinner

Be advised there is a known issue/field fix for 2010-2014 F150 involving fuse #27. Seems the fuse socket is undersized (physical, not amperage) for the load the fuel pump can put on it sometimes. I replaced mine proactively in my 2011 F150. See https://www.fordpartsgiant.com/parts/ford-kit-terminal_el3z-14293-a.html

Bad fuse holder on fuse #27 can cause exact symptoms you describe. Check for melting of fuse 27 socket.

Great Info! I did see that and Told him about it. You do bring up a good point of the cause. "Bad melting Fuse Socket" !
He's been looking for a newer truck and going through the aches and pains of that right now! Crazy!

I had a relative spend > $2000 in repairs, flights, etc. when this went bad on him during a cross country trip. Replaced the fuel pump, hotel expenses, more, all due to bad fuse #27. Do the fix even if it's not root cause of current problems. Took me about an hour and $30.

Sounds like you might have had experience with it before. Have you replace one? If so what's entailed?

I ordered the Kit! Even if he trades it in it'll only take me about an hour like you said! It's the right thing to do!
Not sure if they include a relabel of the #27 re locate to another spot. (Looks like possibly the white stickers are exactly for that purpose). I'm big on properly marking what's been done! Okay went back and watched the Video and understand the stickers are for just that. Relocate the #27 fuse to #70 as the Sticker indicates. My bad for rushing through and skipping!!!
