low shop ceiling

I my name is krish from marysville wa state. I am trying to install a 2 post lift designed for a low ceiling (minimum 12') required. my problem is my shop ceiling is only 9' 6". one option is to punch out a section of the celiing to make up the rest of the height needed. my question is how do I secure that section of rafters that I remove.
