Do any of you guys know where I can get a lower temp thermostat for my garage. I have the modine hotdawg. Its not quite hooked up yet. I would like something that goes down to 40f. Preferably non programable.

Home Depot has a programmable Honeywell that will go down to 40. It was their cheapest model, $15-20 if I remember right. If you are not in a rush, I can send you mine (for free) in a couple weeks, I am putting one in with a web interface so I can control it remotely.

I bought a $25 one at Lowes that goes down to 45 degree F. It is just a plain manual set, but it does have a digial display and up/down arrow keys. I leave it set a 45 F and it keeps the building at that temp.
I heard that Grainger sells thermostat that will go to 35 or 40? You can goto their web site and search?

OK, stupid idea, but what if you mounted the t-stat closer to the ceiling?
I realize what you are trying to do - keep the garage at a cooler temp when you aren't there. Since warm air rises, in theory the heater shouldn't have to run very long to bring the area near the ceiling to a temperature where the t-stat will kick out.
Maybe even set it up so you can move the t-stat around - close to the heater when you aren't there, and farther away when you are working out there?

I will only be out there a few days a week for a couple of hours. Wheres a good spot to mount the thermostat? I wouldnt think you should put it in the path of where the fan from the heater blows. Maybe to the left or right of the heat path?

This is the one I have in my garage (actually the previous model). It goes down to 35F. I keep mine set at 38F and it works great. Only $30.00.

Just get an old fashioned mercury thermostat out of your junk drawer. Won't go down to 40? Mount it at an angle to tip the mercury back accordingly.

Did that in the house here. Mrs Sammerdog was always bellyachin' about it "being too cold... ...look at the thermostat - it's only 65 degrees in here...."
Tilted the sucker about 10 degrees clockwise. Now it reads like it's 74 degrees in the house, wife still complains about it being cold, but ends up saying "...maybe it's just me...."
I save a bundle on my gas bills.

There was a guy that once hung out on this board that had a trick like that, except he had multiple non-working t-stats hung at various places around the house. (Remember the guy with the copyrighted © name?)

I don't mind at all. I bought it to use for a couple months while we were renovating my shop, but once we are done, I won't have any use for it. I would rather send it to someone that could use it, then leaving it sit around or throwing it away. We need to finish the drywall taping/sanding before I can get my new thermostat up and running. We expect to start taping by Friday. I don't know for sure how long it would take, but worst case it shouldn't be more than 2 weeks. PM me your address and I will send it out as soon as I am done.

I sent you a PM. Yeah im just starting the drywall thing myself. I sheeted the ceiling and not am on to sheeting the walls. Then I get to do the taping/mudding just like you. At least I will be able to be comfortable in the garage when its -30f outside after I get it all done.

I got the Programmable RiteTemp Thermostat linked to earlier in the post. I didnt need programmable, but you can change the offset to up to 2 degrees. and it goes down to 35. Plus you can recalibrate it to match other thermostats in the house. Got it at Home depot
