Low Voltage = Compressor Issues

The electrical reset switch keeps tripping on my compressor. The compressor is a Husky 26 Gallon with an oil-free motor. The manual states input at 120 V, 60 HZ, AC Only, 15.0 amps. I have it running in a shop that has either 100 or 200 amp service (that is another question as to how I can tell). Is the issue that the compressor is not getting the "juice" it needs?

With the compressor running use a multimeter to test the voltage at another receptacle on the circuit. It should be within 10% of the no-load voltage. If not, you have a bottleneck somewhere.

If you have an amp clamp, put it on the hot lead and see what kind of current it draws when running. If above 15A you have a problem.

Finally, what pressure is it tripping out at and is the unloader functioning?

It trips out at about 100 PSI. I bought the unit as a store display (great price), but it had LOTS of dust inside of it. I cleaned all that out hoping that was the issue. The reset pops out, then I wait a few seconds, I hear some "air" being released and then the reset can be reset and the unit runs.

Most likely the reset on the compressor itself is a thermal overload. Has nothing to do with incoming power unless the voltage is low (doubtful, you would be having other issues also).

If you had power problems in the building (such as a 15 amp breaker and 14 gauge wiring), you would most likely be tripping a circuit breaker in your "breaker box".

Look at the main disconnect/circuit breaker in your panel (or outside if not in the panel) and see what is marked on the handle for amperage.

This past weekend it seemed to work perfectly. I just emptied it completely and it again fill right back up to 150 PSI. Is it possible that the motor had some sort of "break-in" period?
