Low voltage flood lights?

I'm planning to build a detached carport this fall, and would like to have a few floodlights so I'm not groping around in the dark every morning. I could run 120V, but that's a bit of a chore digging a deep enough trench to meet code. Do they make low voltage lights with enough guts to light up a small carport? I'm not talking 1,000 foot-candle lighting, but just enough to avoid stepping on a copperhead before I see him. Solar is out because they would go dead before morning, but I could run a low voltage line pretty easily, with the power pack on a sensor for automatic dusk-to-dawn lighting. Anyone got any recent, real-world experience?

There's lots of choices in low voltage lighting. But dont bother with the big box stores, they only sell the cheapest junk. Go to a lighting supply house or a local electrical supply house and tell them you are looking for professional grade low voltage lighting. You'll find what you are looking for.

I actually had good luck with the "Volt" brand sold online.

Just buy their higher end stuff, their economy line is junk. I also agree most of what is sold at the Big Box stores like Home Depot is junk plastic.


I redid my front and back yard and was floored how much landscape lighting is for the "good" brands, no way was I going to drop that kind of money. Like $150 a light. The Volts were like $30 a piece and were heavy duty. Very happy with them, felt hevay duty and high quality. Has a lifetime warranty.

I use the replaceable LED Philips bulbs sold at Home Depot, you can get plenty of light out of them with a low voltage line. Nice thing about LED is you don't need as big a transformer as you did with traditional halogen style lights.
