Lower rated Outlets on Higher rates Circuits

Can someone clear the muddied water on this for me?

Example is a 50 amp 240 volt circuit. Can 15-20-30-& 40 amp receptacles (outlets) be placed on this circuit. Assume correct wire size leading up to all lower rated outlets (ie. 6-2), no disconnects or other things in between.

The laws of natural selection tell me to put in a 50 amp outlet in. It's my understanding that everything leading up to the outlet has to be sized for the circuit? Not sure how code is written on this though.

No, not for general convenience receptacle usage. The wiring size is ok but receptacles have to be protected so their rating matches the circuit ocp. One exception is that multiple 15's can go on a 20 amp ckt, however.
I would like to see how you would go about landing the 6's on 15, 20, 30a receptacles!

If you feel you need all of this flexibility at one location, you could wire a 50a ckt w/6-3 and use the rv adapters that exist to get you to the ckt size you actually need. Using the type that have built in OCP in the adapter.

Depending upon the location, you may need receptacles anyway and might even need to be gfci protection to meet current code.
