Using jack stands under the car to "backup" the unit just in case.

I guess putting them under the arms isn't the best option when they could just go next to the arms.

Are you asking if you can lower a car on a lift onto jack stands or am I missing something here?

As long as the car is resting on jack stands on all 4 corners with the stands being positioned on the right spot then its fine.

Now that I think about it I think you mean that the lift arms would be sandwiched between the frame rails (or pinch welds) and the jack stand?

Do you mean using jackstands under the arms of the lift?
I ain't not no engineer, but I wouldn't do it since the arms are now stressed at a different point.

I personally wouldn't do it. I'd be worried I'd drop it too much and bend the arms. That and it just doesn't sound...'right' to me.
Why not just move the jack stands slightly behind or in front of the pads and just leave the arms up as a type of safety net?

I am also havingtrouble with the wording of this question. Not sure, but I think you are talking of having the lift arms between the jack stands and car?
