Just a note, those pass through sets are Metric/SAE sockets in one. They don't work the best, but of course, will be suitable for some tasks. Just a heads up.

I already got a few cancelations. The SD thread said in some stores the employees were seen hoarding the good stuff to the back so they can purchase them themselves. What's to really keep an employee who is supposed to pick your online order from stashing it somewhere and then calling you to say it's out of stock.

I have some cheap-o HF calipers. I'll measure 'em in a bit.

And true on the staff grabbing them for themselves. Lesson learned: don't order ahead. I finally got a set after going there in person.

Stopped by the store in Kalamazoo, MI and picked all this up for $32. I didn't need any of it, and I'm really not sure what I'm going to end up doing with it all. Can't beat the prove though!

Anyone have experience with the blue hawk stuff? I ordered a few things due to the inability to get there soon. I'm waiting on the cancellation call. Lol

Not bad for $60. Wrench sets were gone in both stores I went to. How did that 1 Blue Hawk set get in there???

Just got back to the computer--my receipt is three [3] feet long listing 75 line items to include both SAE and Metric ratcheting combination wrenches:#379799 and #379800 @ 9.45 each--to boot: 516024--double box end-high polish @ 5.40. I had to purchase items in singles in order to complete most sets--Flex-sockets by Kobalt were also less than 1.00 each. The only items I missed and I will go for them after I close this note were the 34 piece combination wrench set @ $6.00 and the 1/4 inch xtreme ratchet @ 2.25. My Zip is 75074 and they are giving this away--I only got 1 item each--the're loaded here but it's going to be a supersonic clean out in a very short time--Get it while you can--I actually wanted everything I bought--only spent a total of $108.00 to include tax. By the way, ask for your military discount and present your ID (under $100.00=no manager approval) VA card works in this area for an additional 10% reduction (paid my taxes, right!). All KOBALT [I ignored the Blue Hawk]. COO is Taiwan. Thank you so much Spn1025, 069GMC5.3L and toored plus all others who contributed info on this radical markdown. I owe ya one!! Stan

The only good use for Blue Hawk is to throw in the kitchen drawer so you don't have to run to the basement/garage/shop to grab something quick. I wouldn't even trust the stuff as a cheap set to keep in the car trunk, that's what Kobalt is for.

Just got back from hitting two local stores.

some good deals some junk.

Kobalt Standard (SAE) and Metric Mechanic's Tool Set (80-Piece)

Item #: 229157 | Model #: 86216
$12 good deal

Kobalt 7-Piece Standard Polished Chrome Standard (SAE) and Metric Combination Wrench Set

Item #: 516024 | Model #: 87059
$6 bucks and not sure they are worth that.. spline drive that fits metric and sae

Kobalt Standard (SAE) and Metric Mechanic's Tool Set with Hard Case (49-Piece)

Item #: 573350 | Model #: 86762 $12 bucks
more of that sae/metric spline drive ****

crows feet .90-`1.20 each decent tools no luck on a full set

12pt flex chrome sockets .90 each no 10mm in stock though at either store decent sockets though.

Extensions $1-2.25 each

How well if at all does the extreme access spline stuff work? Have to test them out in the morning but I never had luck with stuff designed to fit both sae and metric.

Well boo i went ot my store and it was pretty well picked over. But i didnt expect much. All i really wanted was the ratchets.

All that was left was the...dual marked (quad marked?) stuff. Ie metric and Sae on the same socket or wrench. Plus some random other stuff.

I did notice quite a few yellow stickers all over the tool section but none like this deal.

I'm probably going to give what I bought to my brother. He doesn't take care of anything, and these will probably last him just as long as something better. He'll end up leaving them outside to rust or just misplace them more than likely.

The funny thing about all this Kobalt stuff is that it's all getting replaced with the exact same thing, with a different part number. 573350 is getting replaced by 573358. I think they are exactly the same. Maybe the new one is made in China instead of Taiwan? I should have checked.

Edit: I think I got the wrong new part number, but i saw the new replacement set in store

Is there a way to check prices of a product from all of the local stores at once?

You can install the userscript I wrote:

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=298880

The script works on m.lowes.com, but you can run it from a PC.
It runs on Firefox or Chrome. You have to install the add-on Greasemonkey (Firefox) or Tampermonkey (chrome). It also works on Android phones running Tampermonkey, but the display isn't perfect. Select your stores and it will save them for the next time.

I went to Lowes and got a set of the ratcheting wrenches (non-flex, not reversible) for $10.50 and a bunch of sockets sets for $2 each. One store had a bunch of the Xtreme Access sockets, but were sold out of the ratchets, so they weren't moving.

I went to buy a pipe wrench last week and this is exactly what happened. The 14" cast iron wrench had 2 part numbers, one was full price and made in China and one was on clearance for $4 and made in Taiwan

Of course I grabbed the cheaper, Taiwanese one

I also noticed that with the pipe wrenches. This is just making it even more of a reason to never buy hand tools from Lowes in the future.

Thanks folks! Hit up two local stores after work and found some sweet deals. Lots of stuff I'll actually use and not worry about damaging them.

what's odd is my nearest store that tends to drop prices first isn't anywhere near these prices yet and every thing seems to be in stock. Have to keep an eye on it to complete the crows feet and flex socket sets. The extreme stuff doesn't really seem like I would use them at all.

Did u check online with that store set? You may be looking at the new replacements, not the cheap ones we are buying. Do a search for "Kobalt xtreme access", and "Kobalt set", filter for "in store", then scroll through the list.

Blue Hawk is Lowe's cheap house brand. Most of it is made in China and not that well made. I bought a set of stubby wrenches recently, and they look really cheap (which they were).

Kobalt is their "premium" house brand. Kobalt tools have a lifetime warranty and the COO is often Taiwan.

As with all the house brands, the tools are made by different manufacturers at different factories so even within the same label you can expect varying degrees of quality.

oinline and instore that's why I hit two others, I have no less then 6 with in 20 min drive from me. I know the drill with lowes but thanks for the tips. Its still the old stuff, currently 20-40% none have hit the next step of mark downs some are still full price. I bet it will drop some time later this or next week. flex sockets $3 each crows feet $4 up. roto ratchet is at $20 vs 5 bucks in other stores all the same item numbers. The new stuff is china on most and has new item and Model numbers.

the 80pc socket set in the zipper case I paid 12 bucks for is still at 79.99 same item and Model numbers one of the better deals I think too. wonder if I should return some stuff there just to see what happens.:wtf:

Picked up a bunch of the Blue Hawk stuff today, might not be great, but good gravy it was cheap. Stubby wrenches for $1.20/set, I can't pass that up even though I don't need them.

Also picked up some super-cheap Kobalt extensions, swivel sockets, etc. A few of my other buddies picked up some gear as well.

The Blue Hawk ratchet is absolute junk, I wouldn't pay a penny for it. I doubt it will hold up to even light duty...though everything else they make seems to be useful to some extent.

Please, do NOT order any of these online. Go to the store and grab them. In my experience, if you order online your order will either get canceled for no reason with no notification OR you will be billed and your item will disappear. I've never had a major closeout deal ordered online go through with Lowe's.

Don't forget to check for the past deals that some have posted. I've found several of these bargain deals while walking around, didn't need them so I didn't buy...they often hide them in the paint section and in the ladder, pickup tool box aisles.

Indeed. Once they're made aware of it they'll jump on it.

Ugh, you guys got me. I wound up picking up a set of pass through sockets at ratchets in all 3 sizes, plus a couple of 1/4 and 1/2" locking extensions in different lengths as well as a half dozen crowfoot wrench sizes I didn't already have. $35 total, not bad at all.

I can see the most use in the 1/4" locking extensions. One thing I looked at in store that was total junk was the 3/8" flex head pass through ratchet. All three in store had extensive sideways slop on the flex hinge, as if you'd break the hinge with heavy stress. I simply couldn't purchase it, even at the discounted price. The fixed handle pass through ratchets felt much sturdier.

the first store I grabbed the 49pc set from had 5 in stock buried behind the newer model numbers... it now shows 0 in stock and I only grabbed one. Yes they will sit on stuff and hide it until it hits rock bottom and then buy it.

I even had a cashier ask if she could have one of the items last time they did this with the ratcheting screw driver sets. I couldn't find them after they hit $8 when I picked up a set for my self and another member. The store showed plenty in stock at the time. 2 weeks later I found 3 them on the other side of the store hidden behind light bulbs of all things..

I have found stuff stashed at my local Lowe's several times. I don't even order online anymore. I figure if I want it it's worth driving over and getting it. No point in giving someone a chance to take it. My mother used to work at Kmart. She did it a lot before Christmas.
