So what do you all think of the lowes double drive ratcheting screwdriver? Is this just one of those gimmick tools. I played around with one in the store and it seems pretty cool.

Depends what you want it for. It's not a serious tool. It won't make you any money. However it's perfect to keep in the kitchen drawer for when you need a screwdriver in the house.
If you have a set of normal screwdrivers, and a cordless screwdriver, you will never use it.

Have you ever owned or even used a Snap-On ratcheting screwdriver?

If not, I suggest you do so.

That Lowes driver is les useful than a C'man dogbone wrench in my world.

Niether of the above are "big boy" tools but both can be useful in a pinch if your wife needs to fix something in a the house.

Stuey here on GJ did a review of it some time back.

Haha. Yes I own a SO ratcheting screwdriver! I thought the lowes had a pretty cool design but couldn't get myself to buy it as I suspect it's a gimmick tool. Not thrilled about COO either.

I got one of these for Christmas today and used it once. I liked it, but that's not much experience and I don't have a SO ratcheting screwdriver. For the record, I had one of the dogbone wrenches and it was a joke. It was also a gift, but I think this screwdriver will be much more useful.

i like the idea of it and the speed it has, but unsure how much of advantage it would have in reality.

that being said im thinking getting one just because i wouldn't mind trying it for house type items.

got them as a birthday present. small one is a joke, its ratchet mechanism is rough and catches. the big one is in my junk drawer for household repairs. only there because i don't want to go get the makita from the garage. it speeds up putting on a switch cover or such... not for heavy use.

I bought the set mostly for the precision screwdriver. At first both screwdriver's ratchet mechanisms were rough and I thought they were defective, but both operated more smoothly after they were used a few times. What disappointed me was the fact that if you use them and need a fair amount of torque, you can't use the double drive option because it will lock up and then they can only be used like a regular ratcheting screwdriver. But if you need a lot of torque, you should probably be using a regular screwdriver in the first place. JMO.

I have yet to see anything on TV in the last 10 years that wasn't a gimmick.

the concept of a ratcheting screwdriver didn't need improved on.

Funny, I just got one for Christmas 5 minutes ago. I think it will be perfect for opening battery compartments on the boys toys. My big one is very smooth, but the smaller one was a little rough. Perfect for keeping up with the household.

I bought the set of two, simply because yet were 14 bucks. I've forced myself to use them at work over the last week, bypassing all other screwdrivers just to see. The double drive feature is useless 99% of the time. I installed a snorkel on a Linde, and various hoses going to a vaporizer. You can't ever hold the collar cause you are holding the part in question. It did however show me that I have a need for a good, quality ratcheting screwdriver. Can't wait till the SO guy comes thursday haha.
