Just stopped at my local lowes and noticed they had two 29 Pc drill bit sets on sale.

Skil split point for $20

hepa6unu.jpg

Hitachi split point for $17

Both are gold oxide, and for what it's worth, COO is china.

Can't speak on the quality of either of these but for 17-20 bucks I can't imagine they aren't at least a decent value

Those Skil are almost always at that price. They aren't bad especially for the price.

Apologies than if this isn't a hot deal. I was just suprised because I hadn't seen 29 pc sets at my lowes until this. Wish I would have saw this sooner, bought the 29 pc set off the matco truck for closer to $200 :shocking:

I think so, but don't quote me on that. Note that the 29-pc has more sizes.

That's the issue, they don't have them in a normal place. They were on an end or display someplace they didn't belong. They are 3 different places at the 3 Lowe's I go to.

The location i don't normally go to has a few of the 130pc Hitachi gold oxide sets hidden right in the middle of plumbing, of all places. The price seems ridiculous at $30. Has anyone used these? I know they were a special thing for the holidays, so I'm curious whether they're even of "ok" quality.

most of the sizes are better than ok quality. drill and spit nice chips actually. i cant recall the sizes, but the 3 big ones in the kit dont drill too good for me. not sure if the steel was too hard for them, or i was drilling at wrong speed. i stopped using them so i wouldnt ruin the tips. drill though anything else like butter. was trying to go through some 3/8" mild steel sheet, but now im thinking its not mild steel. you got a good bit of smaller sizes if you like to lose them or break them. ive got a ryobi kit i bought prob 7 years ago, and those suckers will drill like no tomorrow. they are black oxide with the titanium bluish coating FWIW

Haven't used either of those brands but have used a number of other Chinese-made brands and so far they were all lower quality. Not saying there are no good Chinese bits, I haven't seen any though.

The Skil I can say are lower quality than Noreseman. I don't remember the name of the others we used to get from MSC but they are lower than those too.

However they are higher quality than almost any other chinese twist bits I have used until you get into the higher dollar Dewalt sets (pilot points 1/64-1" set for example). I have actually had very good success with my HF Ti coated set, and put these at or above that level for quality and longevity, factoring in re-sharpen-ability I would say that set at $20 is a great value.

I opened both and the holders are the same except for color and each bit has the exact same engraving on them.
