In my quest for cabinets, I really want a wall of cabinets like this.

16foot_1a.jpg

Problem is, to have it custom made was about 9k.

I was at Lowes today, and they had Kitchen cabinets on the shelf, already made. I could do the back wall with base cabinets along the back, counter top, and then wall cabinets along the top. The cost would be about 3K max with installation.

Any thoughts?

Thats the beauty of "pay and take" cabinets, they are just made and sold. Anything when it comes to fitting a proper area with dimensions of it's own, turns into labour hours for someone to specifically make. So, at say $50 an hour, it adds up for custom made ones, let alone an independent shop on a budget. All the pre-made stuff is done with jigs, so they can blast out 500 or so a day, cheap to make, low labour.
So, if you can make it fit the way "You" are happy with, thats what counts!
Good luck.

Having done a few kitchen construction & renovation projects, when it came time to build myself a 'hobby area' in the basement I decided to go with the pre-built cabinets from Lowes. Buying individual cabinets is the perfect way to do an ongoing project on a as-time-permits basis, and I stained their unfinished Birch cabinets just how I wanted them.

It's great to see more P-car fans here too

You might find these of interest. They come in 12, 16, and 24 inch depths and multiple heights and widths. Each cabinet will hold over 300 lbs. My price, custom designed, shipped/delivered to my house and installed by their local distributor was a fraction of the PURCHASE price for ANYTHING available from the big box stores. Also, they hang off the floor which I feel is a great advantage. http://www.garagestoragecabinets.com/
The pictures of actual installations in their "Photo Gallery" should give you a few ideas of their capability. Mine have been installed for over a year and look as good (perfect aleignment, etc) as the day installed.

I bought my cabinets and countertops at Home Depot.

I wonder what it would be like if you took the base cabinets, and put them together with a countertop and put them on wheels, so you could move them around and be able to move to sweep the garage out. My wall would be about 15 feet long, so it might be a little strange moving it, but how often would you move it.

Hope your rep is as impressive as Byron Burns the rep in my area was. I've seen several jobs he designed and installed out here...All customers said he's a perfectionist...not a bad comment from any I talked with. Let us know how they do for you.

Did you do just that one wall? How long is it, and how deep are your cabinets?

Do you mind asking what you paid?

Thanks

I'm not ignoring your question. I have 4, 12-442 cabinets and 3, 12-66A cabinets. That equals 6 feet width and 6 feet height of 12 inch deep cabinets and 8 feet width and 4 ft height of 12 inch cabinets. Two of the 2 foot wide cabinets are on each side of the window. I plan to add another 6 foot height cabinet a corner unit to finish out the wall once I get that area cleaned out.
I can't remember my price but have called my rep to get his current price for the existing 14 foot width of cabinets. I'll get back to you as soon as I talk to him...freight costs will probably be much more then they were when he did my job.

I wouldn't even try it. Those prefab cabinets are just fine if you install them and leave them but most are particle board and depend on being bolted to the wall to keep them from racking. You take the wall away and add several hundred pounds of stuff and it wouldn't take long before they get loose especially such a long length.

Yeah you could beef them up but by the time you took that effort and the material cost then you might as well build a cabinet out of good 3/4 ply that will be able to take the stress of being moved like that. I would also keep the length down to a more manageable 6-8ft. Less stress weight and not so cumbersome to move.

Honestly if its just going to be against a wall then as long as you seal the toe kick its not going to be a clean up problem in the first place.

Man all the ones I saw in Lowes were particleboard sides and backs. I tried some of those on my enclosed but not heated or a/c'd porch and within two years the particle board was swelling from the Louisiana humidity. If you think humidity may be a problem I'd advise staying away from anything that has a Melamine/particleboard construction

That sounds cumbersome. Why don't you cantilever the bench off the wall and put the cabinets on casters? Then you can roll the cabinets out so you can clean and your bench top would stay in place. It would be sturdier that way and you wouldn't have to chase the counter top around when you were working on something. that way you could have a set of cabinets, say 48" long, then an open space so you can get your legs under there when you were on a stool, and you could leave other gaps for table saws, chop saws etc on casters in between base cabinet sets.

you could then buy as you go, when you had some more cash.
