May be putting this in the wrong forum, but I don't really care.

Has anyone bought and can review the $88 pre-built picnic table from Lowes?

I worked for a contractor who bought a hundred or so of these to put in a break tent. They were bolted to the floor and had to be the most uncomfortable tables I have ever sat on. I believe it was because of the low seat height. The 2 we had at are break area were not as hard on your knees and back because we sat them on 4x4's. I think you would be better off to make one vs buying.:dunno:

If you use galvanized bolts the costs add up quickly. Buying is probably cheaper.

Picnic tables are notoriously uncomfortable. The best I ever saw was created at a refinery by the welders. Had a pipe frame. Two wheels on one end. The boards bolted on and could be replaced as needed. The seats were more like benches. But Exxon welders built it so cost wasn't their consideration.

As to the original post. Depends on who is going to set at it and for how long. Unless your building a bunch of them setting up to build just one isn't worth it for that price.

I built this cedar one for my senior project, $200 in lumber.

If you build it with the same materials and dimensions as the one that the O.P. posted the cost is roughly the same, give or take a buck or two.(based on Lowe's prices). Now if you were to build it out of exotic woods like redwood, teak, or even cedar then yes your cost would increase tremendously.

Funny you should ask. I attended an event at Lowe's yesterday and spent a couple hours at one of their picnic tables. A board is a board as far as comfort goes but the low height positions you on the bones rather than thighs. Seats are too close to the tables, but most picnic tables are like that. Build your own and scale it up.

If you don't want to go through the trouble of designing/cutting all that lumber, can't you just take the lowes kit and replace the beams that the bench rests on with something longer, so that you can place it higher up the legs?

Also, I was at Home Depot last night and they sell something similar for $79. However I'm in Canada but I'm going to assume most things are similarly priced in the States if not cheaper.

I had that table for 4yrs. It was under a tree and hit with the sprinklers daily. It rotted very bad. I did stain it, but it was my fault with the location.

I have a table that I bought at a parks and rec equipment auction. One thing I like about it is that you can slide in from the end. The table you have pictured, the seat beams would not let that happen. IMO that is the problem with most picnic tables.

the wood on mine is just treated two by lumber. When I bought it, one of the table board were bad and one was bowed real bad. I replaced it all, with new fasteners. It has set out in the weather now for going on ten years or more. I have done nothing more than power wash it a few times a year.

If I was buying a table it would have a clear path between the seat and table. I would look at just trying to buy the hardware for the table and getting what ever wood you want to use.

The best picnic table I ever owned was a big old heavy wooden cable spool. I left it when I moved. I miss it. That old cable spool hosted a lot of crab feasts and long gone friends.

Old thread I know, same product and store.

I see this same table on sale at Lowes this weekend. Reading mixed reviews.

Wondering, do the 2 bolts in the photo support the entire weight (or weights) of someone sitting at location X?

Yes - or rather, they are intended to. Wether or not the bolts/wood can hold 2-3 200+lbs people on each side is rather questionable :bounce:

Yellow pine is candy flavored licorice for the ants or insects that will bore through in the legs in my yard.
