Buying a new drywall T-square, and isn't this interesting:

I don't think I've ever seen HF undercut by that much on a basic tool. HD also undercuts them at $12.

Hf not always so cheap anymore.

You can buy a lot of USA made from Epstein’s at damn near the same price on many items. A few years ago I paid like $1.50 more for USA sledgehammer from them vs hf made in India or who knows where.

12.79 with coupon

Well, if we're including coupons and rebates, then Lowe's is $10.20 (11% rebate on everything going on this week).

How are they undercutting them?

They are selling a different product.

If you want to look at it that way. But in that case HF doesn't undercut anyone else's prices on anything, since nobody sells HF's brands but HF, right? Which would make all HF's "Hercules beats DeWalt" type ads meaningless because they're not the same product either.

We could say Lowe's/HD are undercutting HF's price for a competing product, if you prefer to make that distinction. That's a fair way to put it unless you believe there's actually a substantial difference between the two products. There may be, I suppose, but this particular product is hard to get really wrong.

Compare HF chemicals, grease, WD40, Bondo, R134A etc. You can always find it cheaper someplace else.

Because anything that casts HF in a negative light is interesting here.

No, because it may document a shift in HF's market position and strategy. Remember that chart ARFLY posted in another HF-related thread?

He said they seem to be moving from Stage 2 to Stage 3, and if they're no longer concerned with undercutting the competition on price for certain items, this may be evidence for that.

It's also interesting because if HF is no longer the automatic low-price leader, many of us will want to start checking other stores before just heading to HF by default. I was surprised to see it. I went to the HF site to find out how much cheaper the tool would be and whether it would be worthwhile to make two stops (because I have to go to Lowe's for the drywall either way).

Was essentially taught that in marketing or business class.

I agree with the shift from #2 to #3 currently. Their competition was Sears for a huge part.

They are gone. HF now moves to make more money. However, they will always be the low price leader pretty much. They are just looking to sell imported cheap tools.

They are not looking to take on Snap On, Mac, Matco, etc.

Harbor freight isn't necessarily the cheapest place to begin with. If you want cheap garbage, there's plenty of that on Amazon as well.

Hahahaha... SO true.

Well, Harbor Freight is an American company, started by an American entrepreneur, providing jobs for Americans, in many different areas (retail, construction, warehouse, administrative, etc) and provides value for millions of Americans, many who don't make a lot of money.

Given the mind-set, of the world we live in today, what's NOT to hate about HF?

Their products are made in China? Wow, that's never happened before, with any other American company, selling retail products!

according to the alternate reality that some people lived in, it never happened before...

But why is every one bitching now? its a good thing for consumers on these price wars, you'll just have to be more smart about buy stuff that is more gimmicky and fall into those false advertisements.... Buy what you needed to get the job done when it comes to tools. Not what you can show off with.

I don’t disagree that they are moving from 2 to 3. However it was never true that every item they sold was cheaper than the competition. Like any retail establishment they have low margin ‘loss leaders’ and high margin impulse buy items plus everything in between.

Exactly Lowes, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, Meynards, Northern Tool and other retailers are US owned company's that employ people in the US. Competion is good

At unlivable wages with a revolving door-like turnover rate, selling essentially identical rebranded tools from the same three off-shored plants, albeit with a few respectable tools thrown into the mix. It's a race to the bottom.

HJE is where I order tools most days. They know what they're selling, promote US manufacturing, are invested in their company and sell high-quality tools. I only wish they were local.

Totally off topic, but man I wish I got a US general 1 series 44" when they were $300 with a coupon.
