Usually go to Home Depot, mainly because they are 1/2 mile away and most projects require 3 trips. I used to work at Ace Hardware so I know my stuff, which is good because the employees are pretty much worthless

I have been going to Lowes for as long as I can remember, I know the store layout and that makes getting in and out faster. A couple years ago they built a new HD and I have found the lumber to be of better quality. For mist of my "i need a" moments i run up to the local independent hardware store, knowledgeable and friendly. So for me it just depends on what I'm shopping for.

I prefer Lowes because they have a far better selection of hardware ( nuts ,bolts, washers etc ) IMO. especially the grade 8 stuff. also a better selection of things like steel bushings and other odd ball hardware. plus- if you need to ask a question there are employees around. at all the HD's near me it seems like the employees are playing hide/seek all day.

This thread got me thinking: if we put the CEOs of Lowe's and Home Depot together in one room, and asked them what the difference was between their two companies, I wonder what they would say?

Yeah, there is that. But I wonder how they would differentiate the two companies from other than financials.

Realistically they don't really care about things other than the financials. It's not going to be a discussion like you think. It's going to be about P&L statements and such.

HD is better for most stuff, and the staff in our area is much better. The Lowes near us has a serious problem with the laziness of the employees. I was in there last week, and it was very slow as it was mid morning, and there were several groups of employees standing around talking. When I asked for help in finding things, they acted as if they were bothered by me interrupting them.... and I got bad advice where to find what I was looking for. In addition, they had NONE of the things I needed.

Not been happy with Lowe's very often.

Ok. Then let's go down a little in the org chart. How about the Exec VPs of Marketing? If we got THEM in a room, and asked them to differentiate between the two companis, what what they say?

I generally go to Lowes. It helps that Lowes is about .75 mile from my house verus HD at about 5-6 miles. This gets me into trouble with the wife. I walk into Lowes and Somebody is going to address me by name. They tend to know me, drives the wife nuts. She says it is like Norm walking into Cheers. I have never had a problem at Lowes with my Military discount. HD has told me they aren't doing it anymore, this was a while back. Lowes has price matched for me with no problems. And I've never had a problem with any returns. I do like that HD has put up a DAV parking space. I've bought tools at both Lowes and HD, just depends on what I'm looking for. But to top it all off, the women that work at Lowes tend to be easier on the eyes then the ones at HD.

Lowes is Burger King, Home Depot is Mcdonalds.

I think this sums up my feelings to the stores, you can get a burger at either one. Our local HD store has many more floor walkers if you want help, but I hate their selfcheck-out.

Lowes, I don't go in there after a situation last summer. I think it was in a Georgia store, no matter the location, a worker was fired for getting involved with shoplifting. Bold, walking out the door shoplifting.

I wrote Lowes a letter explaining my disgust. They did write back, to their credit..stating they had policies in place and no interference by employees is allowed.
I don't feel safe on their lot, and I will not let my wife go their either. A policy from their lawyers won't help her if there was a problem, a thoughtful, American employee might. It sorry we sink so low...

I am sure there are others with "policies" but I'll go with my best odds, Lowes is not on the list.

My opinions of Home Depot are very low, but probably not for reasons that affect many of you guys. I was a truck driver, I delivered enclosed van and flat bed loads to both places for about 15 years. In all my years driving truck I have never experienced so many rude, unprofessional and just plain inconsiderate workers on the docks and receiving as Home Depot. They operate strictly by a appointment basis for trucks. I would often have to deliver to 8 to 12 stores a day, get held up at one store and you can not make the other appointments on time, occasionally not letting us deliver because we where late or early, forcing us to leave with their material still on our trailer and we could not deliver it until we had a truck in that area again. Might be a week or so for that, these where almost all special order deliveries, meaning a customer was waiting for their product and HD chased away the truck delivering it. Remember that little bit of info next time your special order is not at the store, it may have been there they just wouldn't unload it!
As for lumber quality the company I worked for treated lumber and delivered to both. They get the same grade lumber. They both buy on annual bid contracts and basically force suppliers ( like the co. I worked for) to sell the cheapest, poorest treated lumber that other lumber yards did not want. All in a effort to get their merchandise as cheap as possible. But you will get that at any big box store.

Both are equal distance from my house. 8 years ago, I walked into Lowes with my Great Dane (AKA- 190lbs of puppy love!), they freaked out on me, said my dog was too intimidating and they asked me to leave. We drove to Home Depot and never looked back! This last November I installed heat in my garage, I looked around for the best unit for the best price, Lowes had the best deal. My dog has past on, so I went back to Lowes.:).......I don't know, to be honest I think we need both! Target or Walmart? Sam's Club or Costco? All the competition only benefits the smart consumer!

HD, at least my local, blows for metric fasteners. I've spoken with the manager and received the explanation "there's not enough demand"

I find that interesting, as almost every time I'm in that aisle there is someone looking in the metric cabinet.

I've also completed the receipt survey, citing the issue, and never received a follow-up.

Ive got multiple Lowes & Home Depots within 10 miles of my house, so I shop at both. Just bought a new kitchen for an apartment Im putting on the 2nd floor of my house, cabinets, fridge, gas cooktop etc, all bought from Lowes with free delivery. The pricing was better than home depot in that instance & their customer service was great, I ordered on a Saturday night online & they called me Sunday morning to schedule the first delivery! Cant beat that. I ended up getting all the sheetrock, pex & plumbing stuff at Home Depot though.
I usually like to go to Home Depot because my uncle works in the paint department so Ill ******** with him while Im there.

Both are about the same distance from me, but I almost always end up at the Lowes. Most of the time I'm there looking for hardware and Lowes has a far better selection, especially when it comes to metric or stainless. The other day I went to HD because I happened to be in that shopping center and needed a couple stainless bolts. All they had in stainless were the little screws in baggies. I went to lowes and they had an entire section of pull out drawers full of all different sizes and lengths, washers, locknuts, etc. just like the normal stuff. Since I'm often working on boats where stainless is the only option, Lowes wins hands down when I have to have it now and cant wait to order online.

Which one do you prefer, and why?

Whatever your preference is, explain your logic!

~Tejaas~

Both, depending on what I'm doing.

I find H-D to be more contractor oriented, so when I'm working an I need something I usually end up there.

Lowes, on the other hand, seems to be better when I'm doing some project around the house or when the washing machine takes a dump on a Wednesday night and I need a new one pronto.

We have both right across the street from each other and they share the same road leading to them. Lowe's has always been my choice since they've both been built. Even though they're both warehouses, the Lowe's seems more inviting and calm. All that dam orange color at HD is a turn-off. The people working at Lowe's are nicer and more helpful and seem happier working there.

Home Depot probably has the same policy. Most corporate stores have that policy. They don't want to be sued if the employee is hurt, or if the employee hurts the alleged criminal.

When I was leaving work for the day at a large retail store when I was 19, a kid ran out the door with 3 snowboards. I ran him down, and told him he to stop, go get the snowboards (he had already ditched them when he was out of sight), and take them back. I never touched him, and I was off the clock. I found out later from a higher up that they wanted to fire me, but he talked them out of it. If I had been on the clock, there would have been no talking them out of it.

My thoughts at the time were that I had just saved them $750 bucks. Their thoughts were that they had luckily avoided a lawsuit.

If I were in that situation now, I'd let them go. I don't think they would be paying me enough to take my chances of getting shanked stopping a thief.

I do, however, agree that firing is a bit extreme. I think if all ends well, then a final warning should be enough.

Prefer HD, as it seems to be cheaper than Lowe's, (subject to scrutiny, of course) especially their electrical equipment. Would actually like to have either in my home town, as both are 35 miles away. In my old area, I had 2 of each within 5 miles. Menards is even better, but that's 70 miles. But, we are getting a Tractor Supply within 8 miles or so! Happy days.
