Your warranty experience is going to vary depending on which store you visit. I've had some grab a replacement for me or tell me to do that and come back to the return desk. I think I've only returned two things and on one of those I was told they couldn't swap it without a receipt. This was quite a few years ago, so I don't know what would happen if I tried to warranty something today. Pretty much identical experience with Home Depot and Husky as well.
I suggest everyone take a picture of your tool receipts or print your online tool orders to image format shortly after a purchase so that your warranty will be honored should you need it. A lot of those paper receipts will fade over time and become useless. I have all my tool receipts organized into a tool folder, then a secondary folder for lifetime warrantied items. Everything is labeled by name and place it came from. I probably spent a good 3-4hrs on that, but it's well worth it when needed as it literally takes a second or two to find what I'm looking for. Aside from warranty purposes, having all those receipts for insurance purposes is another benefit of keeping up with them if you're the victim of a theft, fire, natural disaster, etc.
