LPG Water Heater Vent through Roof

I just had my roof replaced and I was looking over everything, I came across the vent for the propane water heater and I see sunlight coming down. I can't see the sky or specific path, but light is coming down. I would have expected that the flashing would stop all light. The roofer said they resealed it with silicone. Is this sunlight okay/normal? If it's going to leak, I'd like to get ahead of it.

You should post a pic from the roof side so we can see what the flashing looks like. Doesn't seem right that light is coming through.

All of the above. I'll bet that the storm collar isn't sealed to the pipe properly.

Or maybe they used clear silicone sealant? (If so, that's not the stuff I would use. I used the high temp black stuff specifically for stove pipe.)

It may not have been silicone, as that was my term. It was a caulk tube with a black sealant. Unfortunately, it's on the second floor and I'm about as nimble as a rhinoceros on a skate board so I avoid going up there at all costs. I'll see if I can get one of his guys to take a picture from the top. Thanks for the input.

They used a tall cone flashing,

And it should have a storm collar.

and caulk around the top of the storm collar. Clear silicone you might see some light, but I would not expect to see any light, at least not that much!

The rubber flashing is not legal any where because with b-vent you need 1" clearance to combustibles, and the rubber would be in contact with the b-vent.

You lost me here. Is it v- or b-vent? Also our propane water heater has a pvc exhaust pipe that goes from the basement out between the first floor joists and through the rim board and vinyl siding. Are there different types of heaters requiring different types of exhaust pipes.

Yes, you have a power-vented unit. There are many different types of heating systems requiring different vents

The right way to install a metal to metal flashing to storm collar is to put the ring of silicone around the pipe and then push the storm collar down into the silicone. It should fit at the top of the flashing. If there is a gap, you may get wind blown moisture dripping down the pipe.

We are talking about b-vent in the OP 's post. Please don't confuse the issue with discussing other venting as they all have different requirements.

The "v-vent" was a slip up.
