I have been looking around here for a while, but this is my first post. I am working on designing my new shop, which with any luck will happen this spring. I am in need of ideas on how to break it up to be the most functional. My plan for the building right now is 40x100x16 tall. My current thought is to divide it into two sections, of 40x50 each, and heat one side of it. I like having the open area, but it might be nice to make some smaller areas to contain dirty things like woodworking, or sanding down cars, or whatever else might come along. The unheated side would be more for covered storage. I am hoping that others will make suggestions on what works well and what doesn't to get the most function out of the shop. I have a nice 32x50x12 that I built two years ago, but we will sell our house and current shop after I build the new one, and then build a new house there as well.

So far this is what I have designed for the new shop, but it has a long way to go.

Even your "messy" workbench is cleaner than mine! Nice shop and nice car.

Where's the overhead door for the cold side?

Need a connecting door between cold and hot sides (maybe a barn style slider?

Man doors where?

You should see the shop right now- it is trashed! Thanks on the car!

I did a little more on the drawing last night, I just hadn't added a few things in yet.

I probably should have started at the beginning. We bought 18 acres in October. The plan is to build the new shop, then put our current house up for sale, then build a new house after or current one sells. The driveway will go back off from the road about 600' then turn right about 250' to the house, but continue straight back to the shop. The property is pretty dense woods, so I have been clearing trees and brush. So far I have the driveway most of the way cleared, the shop mostly cleared, and part of the house. We haven't decided on a print for the house yet, so I didn't want to clear more than I need to. The property is a little goofy shaped.
