I took one of my Big Dawg ratchets apart today and noticed that there was no grease inside. The last ratchet I took apart was a rebuilt raised panel Craftsman and it was full of grease. What would you guys recommend I use to lube the Big Dawg before putting it back together? Also what should I use to lube my favorite fine tooth round head SK ratchet? Thanks.

What should I use to lubricate it while putting it back together. I already took it apart. It looks like it only had some light weight oil from the factory. Sorry, I edited the first post to hopefuly make my questions a little clearer. I was also asking about the lube to use in my SK ratchet.

Somewhere in this forum is a fat thread about ratchet lube.
Lots of different stuff recommended.
I've recently started using Hight Temp Wheel Bearing Grease, the blue stuff by Lubrimatic.
Slippery and doesnt keep the pawl teeth from engaging the gear.

Everyone swears by their own personal method around here. Here are some options:

no lube (whatever falls in there from use)
10w30 oil
machine oil (also called 3 in 1 oil I think)
Marvel Mystery oil
lithium grease
wheel bearing grease
ATF
fancy spray lubricants meant for guns and such
fancy liquid lubricants meant for guns and such
Snap-on special ratchet oil
etc. etc.

I personally use some bearing grease I already had. Just try a couple of things you have lying around and experiment. If you don't like it just clean it out (I use carb cleaner) and try something else. I believe the general consensus is to just use a bit of grease - do not pack it in.

I posted I have used mobil 1 synthtic in a tube for bearings and stuff the redish pink stuff, works great in everthing from proto 5449 to snappy's but some of the newer crafty pro slim line, you can't back it to the max, so just be careful, but works great and I just clean out the extra if it leaks out of the ratchet.

I always ust grabbed a smear from one of the grease guns. Rub it on and go.

That's what I did with my Protos I got off ebay too as they were all dry inside. I have Red-n-Tacky in my grease gun and that's what I used. I also did all my Craftsman and some of my SK ratchets. They all work smoother and quieter now.

The Craftsman and SKs did have a thin coating of oil in them and it's not all from use either as 2 of the C-mans have never been used yet since I bought them.
