What do you guyz use to lube the garage door hinges, tracks, etc. with ? I just installed a Chamberlain belt drive opener. The door is ancient and creaks like crazy.

It's my understanding that dry lubes like graphite are what door manufacturers recommend. Their reasoning is, wet lubes will attrack dirt and other "stuff" that will hinder the door.

Of course, I didn't listen to them and I used white lithium grease on my last door and it worked just fine. Mind you, I didn't go overboard when I applied it. Use an acid brush or something similar and you'll find that it goes a looong way.

Hope this helps.

Dry lubes, maybe silicone...no oil or grease...

Only thing that gets lubed on my garage door is the chain for the opener, the little bearings for the rollers that ride in the track and the hinges that "fold" as the door goes up. Usually just use Triflow

Overhead door came out and replaced my torsion spring. Did a maintance lube on the door. He must of used oil because it ran down the panels. Went to clean it a week later, and it like stained the door. I just spray the hinges with WD40 every 6 months.

WD40 is what we use, you do need to use it more often though as it dries up much quicker. Lithium grease or anything thick is usually a no-no being that it is messy and attracts dirt and will wear out the bearings alot quicker. Not to mention when it's cold the grease will get cold and stiff and actually make things worse. I know WD40 isn't a lubricant but it is just much cleaner and gets into places most of the other stuff doesn't.

Thanks for the feedback guyz !
I was thinking white lithum grease. Was hoping to redo the garage in '06, but '07 looks more realistic now. Bought and dormered a house this year. I need a break from construction. Figured I'd be able to migrate the GDO to the new garage.

Stopped by at Ace hw yesterday and picked up graphite powder. For $1.79, I figured how can I go wrong. Did the rollers and hinges and it's whisper quiet now. Also noticed that there's a wheel missing. The missing wheel causes the door to make a little hum when the door gets to the top. The squeaking was soooo bad before that I couldn't appreciate the quietness of a belt driven opener.....I'm impressed.
