Lufkin 6' extension wood rule at lowes

I picked up one of these this morning on clearance for $1.12 normally $15.97

I will have to scout the local Lowe's. I use a folding rule (several, actually) constantly.

They really shine when you need to measure accurately between two fixed surfaces, such as the length of a needed shelf inside a cabinet. Of course, this can also be done by lapping and clamping two sticks together to represent the length.

Haha... My dad taught me that, I guess he is a pretty smart guy . My dad has always loved making stuff out of wood and he has always used a fold out wood rule like that one. I used to absolutely hate them and never understood why he used them; until I actually needed to use one to measure and cut some blocking for a deck I was building.

Oh hey he's from Eastern North Carolina too, Beulaville actually. Maybe it's just the Eastern North Carolinians that use wood extension rules.

Brick rules have their own special markings. Different animal altogether. The carpenter folding rule has a slide out on one end of it to allow inside measure.

Always wondered what they were used for, then my contractor neighbor helped me build my mudroom and deck with a transit. Question answered.
Also saw him use it to rip boards accurately on a table saw, will be looking for one now!

You can straighten one, then fold it in the middle about 8". Insert an opened pocket knife into the joint, put the **** end of the knife on your extended index finger. It will look and balance like a swept airplane wing, and balances amazingly well. My carpenter Dad showed me this when I was a kid, and it always impressed me. Great memory.

Two weeks ago, during the Nicholson File clearance bonanza, I noticed Lowes had the Brick Layer version of Lufkin folding rule on clearance. I have no use for a brick layer, but if the engineer was on clearance, I'd have bought all of them.

Can you tell us what store it came from?
My lowes is $15.45 but they will price match the other stores if i can show them the price.
Same on all the channellock pliers guys are getting deals on.
I cant ever find them at the clearance price.

Their great for any work that requires accurate measurements. My friend was a finish carpenter and he said his foreman would send them home if they did have one on them. I use mine allot to measure overhead. You can actually bend it on a 90 and hold it over your head. When you need an accurate measurement you cant beat it because it doesn't have the end play that a normal tape measure does.

Pipefitters use them regularly.
Funny story............ fitter was making cuts, using his folding rule for measurements.
all cuts were 6'' off.
turned out his kid used the rule over the weekend and busted a segment off.

Pipe fitters normally use a little different version, as do brick masons. The folding rule that I have from a pipefitter friend is fiberglass reinforced nylon, and is inside reading, versus outside. If you open a few segments and lay the ruler on a surface, it is designed to read on the inside of the segments, so the body of the ruler does not get in the way of taking a measurement along a stick of material. That sucker works most excellent for adjusting the width of cut on a table saw.
