Just picked up an M18 Fuel impact and looking to get a decent set of impact sockets for lug nuts that doesnt break the bank.

I dont know that I want to go HF set...but i did find a few Tekton sets that seem to review pretty well.

What is everyone on GJ using?
And, I did search the forum as best as I could.

Thanks

Sunnex, Grey Pneumatic if you're looking for a full set. You can get Williams individual sockets on Amazon if you're just looking for individual sockets.

I like the flip sockets, have a craftsman one and a cornwall I picked up. also have a HF 3 pc. flip set that is every bit as good as the others...unfortunately I don't think they sell them anymore as I wanted to get a set for a friend and there were none to be had...but the flips are definitely my go-to...

The CR-MO Pittsburgh Pro Impact sockets are one of the rare items that are pretty good at HF. They are made in Taiwan (not china) and are probably just as good as any other impacts socket made in Taiwan. Where are the Tekton sockets made? If Taiwan, then they are probably equal quality as the HF sockets. If China, buy the HF sockets.....

Derek, don't let HF impacts scare you. I have plenty of SO and others. But I have some HF impacts too. They are good. I've never had one break on me, and they are cheap enough to replace once a year when they wear out. And they all wear out if you use them.

Is there a place on Amazon to find out where the tools are made? I am showing the Tekton's are from Thailand (origin)

I went with a set similar to the HF and tekton. I got it off eBay for like $17 I think.. It came with 3 double sided sockets/ extension and a plastic case. The case was important for me, and wanted as many sizes just in case I could help somebody on the road. Had I known, I probably would have just gotten the husky set at HD for $20.. It has a case to,and also comes with 2 or 3 double sockets.. So either 4 or 6 sizes for $20 with an extension too. I've used my eBay one a bit and no issue at all.

This is a true story: I was at my grandparents house and they said the tire on their trailer was flat and asked me to remove it. Said they took it to a tire shop and they couldn't remove the tire due to stuck lug nuts. my granddad has a small shop so I thought he'd have a breaker bar and deep socket to fit it. Nope. His CH impact wouldn't budge it. I bent an old tire iron with a pipe on it. I thought I stripped the lug nut out, but the tire iron stripped.

I live 4 hours away so I didn't have my normal tools. I remembered I had one of those flip lug nut sockets and a 18" breaker bar in my trunk. I had to stand on the breaker bar, but I got the lug nuts loose. No damage to the breaker bar or the flip sockets. Win for carrying a simple flip set of sockets and a breaker bar. You never know when you'll need them. Got a set in every car now.

I was looking at that Tekton set actually, so good to know it should be a decent set. I think thats what I will go with! Thanks all.

And then will be in the market for a full on 3/8 and 1/2 impact set as well.

I have the Chicago Pneumatic wheel protector sockets. Thin wall and plastic covers to protect nice rims. Lifetime warranty for when they crack (all thin walls crack eventually).

I have a few Tekton tools and I think they're a good deal for the price point. I just used a 35mm Tekton impact socket for the axle nuts on my Tacoma and it worked just fine. BTW I also have a big set of Ingersoll Rand impact sockets and they were made in Taiwan.

Why not just buy a set of 1/2 drive deep impact set? Mine are Wright and haven't failed me yet.
Because... thinwall.

Fit into those pesky alloy wheels that a standard impact socket doesn't. At least not without gouging up the inside of the bore. A flip socket wrapped in electrical tape makes a terrific non-marring tool for expensive wheels.

There was a thread recently on those. I don't think they have the lifetime warranty since they are not hand tools

Chicago Pneumatic (not central pneumatic from harbor freight). They even have lifetime warranty printed on the plastic case they came in.

I've had the Tekton Flip Set for over a year and used it quite a lot. No issues.

I moved that set to my trunk and plan on getting a full set of 1/2" deep metric impacts for my shop...

I have some of the titan non-marring sockets for lug nuts. If you are looking for a set primarily for lugs I would recommend them, I have powder coated wheels with tight clearances around the nuts and have yet to damage them. I might have considered trying the harbor freight set if I would have seen them first.

+10 on the harbor freight set of Lugnuts sockets. The ones with the red sleeves in the black case. I've had them for a few years now they've survived and held up very well

just an update cause i saw it in the store today.. the HUSKY model in HD comes with 3 flip sockets and the extension in a nice carry case.. its only $20 and does the most popular sizes in both SAE and Metric.. had i known that was there originally, i would have just gotten the Husky since its a really nice set, has a nice case, and has an actual store i can go back to in case anything did happen to break.. im on my own with the ebay one.. this is the Husky set.. dont think you'll do much better for $20

I ordered one of those sets and it no longer has the cutout for the D.93 tire valve tool....good place to put a wheel hanger. Need to find sockets to fill up the other holes in the tray.

I have a set of IR from Amazon.com. They're Made in Taiwan and comes with a lifetime warranty. They're strong and hold out very well. In Amazon.com, if you can't see where it's made in you have to ask in the question section just above the first review. Most people that currently owns or owned it will respond.

Unfortunately this set doesn't come with a 17mm socket.

BMW, Merc, VW, audi, volvo etc will use 17mm. They also use bolts not nuts which is weird but effective. Alot of cars are using 22mm as well. I'd get that set then spring for a 17mm thin wall and a 22mm regular socket. That should about cover everything aside from wheel locks. You can get an extractor set for that.

I think the hex on those is a little tall and some sockets are not broached deep enough to swallow the whole height of the hex. Certain KoKen and Nepros sockets are deep enough, also an ole Bonney impact socket (just regular, not deep) also a Wright shallow impact socket is deep enough. Strangely, some "deep" sockets are not broached as deep as some shallow ones.
Maybe it would work O.K. if the hex doesn't fit all of the way into the socket but I would rather it did there was a thread on here a couple years ago about a rounded over messed up lug bolt on one of those kind of cars

Just picked up an M18 Fuel impact and looking to get a decent set of impact sockets for lug nuts that doesnt break the bank

I got the OEMTools Super Strength Wheel Nut Impact Socket Set from Mobile Distributor Supply a few months ago for $10 and they performed fine. This set comes in a hard plastic case. Price for the same set has increased to $18

http://mobiledistributorsupply.com/...rength-wheel-nut-impact-socket-set-oem-1.html

The OEMTools Super Strength Wheel Nut Impact Socket Set has a thin wall design for access to tight spaces. This Impact Socket Set is built to last up to 3X longer than regular thin Wall Impact Sockets. The Sockets have a reinforcing ring that allows for more torque bearing capacity.

Includes: 1/2" Drive Sizes: 17mm, 19mm and 21mm
Color coded for easy size identification (Blue-17 MM, Gold-19 MM and Red-21 MM)
Protective Outer Sheath for Wheel and Chrome Surfaces
Insert Protects Lug Nuts and Bolts
Maintains Structural Integrity Even Under Extreme Heavy Duty Applications

***They also are clearancing out a $9 version that I have not tried yet***
