Lumber Price Check

I have made myself a list of materials that I will need for my project and price all at HD as just a reference. So far nothing has change in last few days, haven't gone up nor down. As an example 1/2 4x8 cdx 41.00, 2x6x16' around 18.00. Has anyone seen a change to the good in your neck of woods? Where I'm at there are few saw mills that I could purchase materials but I know that its not kiln dried but air dried, I would be kinda afraid that once nail up boards would start twisting & turning.

Odd that prices went up since a mill nearby is reopening in a couple weeks stating that demand is sufficient to resume production. They have a massive supply of logs as that part of operation did not cease.

I have told you what it is, yet you seem to have no interest.

Marc what your saying does make sense, but I also like talking about it. Once I get past septic system, then I'll move forward. Till then I like to ask questions, see what others are doing and how they are dealing with cost.

Usually that **** is lousy quality and only surface dried before being stacked and banded tight to keep it straight. In a high-volume store it’s not out of the bands long enough to warp before you buy it. In a lower volume store most of its warped to hell bc its been a week or three since the bands were cut, allowing warpage. When the local mills air-dry they’ll space it up on 1x1 stickers every few feet, if the lumber’s gonna warp it will do so on the stack before you buy it bc of the sticker spacing.

The old joke about box store wood is that it’s firewood-grade green lumber.

Good point, thanks for explaining. Are prices about the same, I would love to buy from a family owned saw mill instead of HD or any others

Had a new home completed pre covid 11 months ago before lumber started to go up. The builder said same house today (1700 sq. ft.) would see a increase of $20,000.00 in lumber and windows.

If your Big Box lumber supplier had to pay a premium price for lumber and now their costs have gone down; I would not expect that they will mark down the lumber they paid top dollar for.

After they unload the expensive stock on hand, you might see lower prices in the store.

Who would want to sell at a loss?

Hello Like comment on wood products prices. I live in Oregon and worked in woods products for 40 years. I have seen prices go up and down but todays prices are crazy. Supply and demand. 1000 dollars per thousand for 1/2 cdx ply and 800 dollars a thousand for light framing. Logs are cheap (because of fires flooded market). Back in old days mills would add more shifts, but these days they cant find people that will work hard. The anti have shut down any new veneer dryers. Iam planning a new shop, waiting for a down turn in economy, materials and labor like 2007.

Yup. Over $12 for a 12 footer too. Not even fir... just that cheap, blond spruce You bet I picked through the pile for the nicest ones

It was more about buying bone-dry lumber on a day it didn't rain. I guess that's a win.

The 2x4's at Lowes were $6.98 when I was there on Sunday. The wall was full to the top. Seems people are realizing it's pretty stupid to pay $7 for something that was $2.5 a few months back. Let them $7 studs sit and watch prizes come back down.

I thought the prices were a little lower a few weeks back, but I could be wrong.
Menards is pretty well stacked for a town of 5000.

Prices are the same here. Even worse than the price is the quality. Most times I've looked in the past few months everything is fresh cut, soaking wet, and crazy warped.

The report I saw says it is being caused by several factors. Of course the standard "Covid" but mills reduced output creating supply shortages, wholesalers are only buying month to month waiting for prices to drop and retailers want all they can get. The bottom line is if you want it, get your wallet out.

The wholesale price of lumber per thousand board feet in 2012 was about 1/3 of the wholesale price today.

Not everyone can afford to pay an extra $20,000 for lumber on a garage.

If I had to erect a simple shelter today I would consider recycling wooden pallets and steel 55 gallon drums into a building.

The 2x10x16's I need change prices every other day now at Menards. Shoulda bought at $25 two weeks ago. Now they're $41which is what they were 3 months ago.

I have some must-do projects that I will buy for. I'm able to do a lot of the work myself or at least act as the general. I like doing the work and picking up new tools as necessary (nail gun is on the wish list). I am having to make more trade-offs in other areas - I find myself saying, for example, saving $2 a pound of 3 pounds of ground beef pays for a 2X4!!

I picked up a few things saturday from our local, locally owned lumber yard for my shop project. I price checked a few items at menards. lumber yard was cheaper on everything....some items were cheaper after menards 11%. The quality was noticeably better from the lumber yard too. Kind of made me wish I would have got everything from them.
