I don't see lumber prices going down due to all the construction going on and the reduction of timber harvesting. Prices might 'level off' here and there tho.

I am not wanting a political discussion, but the tariff is a direct increase in the cost as well as demand factors.

Edit: I went back and looked at the chart of the lumber futures in an earlier post in this thread. On 11/24 the futures were at $877, now over $1200 as noted. There was a big jump from about $600 just prior to the tariffs being imposed. It seems to me that the big buyers/users saw the tariffs coming and started to hedge by buying the futures contracts, starting the drive up of prices, and then it fed on itself as others saw the writing on the wall and then the tariffs were imposed.

Yay assdemic!
Steel prices are going nuts, too. A $35 chunk of steel is now over $100. Thank goodness I stocked up on old bed frames and junk trailers. :)
Bed frames are terrible angle iron. A lot of them are impossible to drill through and they don't weld like normal steel angle iron. Not sure what kind of steel they are but I throw that junk away.

I have several building projects going and have thought about buying a mil since I have wooded property, but I would have to do a lot of time consuming manual labor before I even broke even from the cost of a mil.

Bed frame 'angle iron' is not junk. Bed frame angle 'iron' is simply tougher than what you're used to dealing with. Note: I cut, drilled, and arc welded such bed frame angle 'iron' in order to fabricate an air compressor stand/base. And no, doing so wasn't easy (you need to use the proper arc rods). But I got through it successfully.

Was at the Orange store today...
Went and grabbed 2 sheets of 3/4 Radiata Pine. $50 sheet before it goes nuts with the rest of the construction Lumber pricing. BCX 3/4 is now $68 sheet, so $50 was a deal.
8ft 2X4 of the GL (good luck) grade were $6.42

Watch lumber futures.

When they went up in October 2021 I ordered the framing package for my shop on the last day of my monthly price bid.
As an example, my osb was $14.95 per sheet.
It sat for 6 weeks in the pole barn and I saved a bunch of money.

Lumber prices are going back to the moon.

Well then, batch up all your old bed frames and send them to me.
Hell no! Send them to me. No international shipping :)

2x4x16 is an odd size and you pay a premium per board ft. At my local HD, 2x8x16 is $19.98. Back in August 2020 (before lumber prices went really crazy) I paid $19.92. So only a $0.06 increase since 2020.

If you are willing to rip down 2x8s, you could save a few bucks without spending much time.
Last time I tried to do that, there was so much pent up pressure in the board, it looked like I was peeling a banana! They don't make em like they used to.

Lumber is a commodity just like metals, oil, pork bellies and grains, commodity prices shift frequently; just watch the commodity markets. When the supply exceeds the demand storage costs will drive the commodity traders to sell, sometimes at a loss, when the traders foresee an increasing demand they will buy future production in the hope of selling it at a higher price during the peak of the demand.

Gift wrap and Christmas trees trees are much cheaper in January than they are in December. Gasoline is always more expensive just before a Summer holiday than after everyone has gone back to school and work.

On October 19th, 2x6x10 #2 better white wood was $8.55.
Last Sunday on January 9th, the same board was at $15.55.

Home Depot, Seattle suburb.
Say pretty much the exact numbers here in VT over the same timeframe.

Had started figuring out my materials for the shop build on 10/21, looked yesterday and all the 2x6 had doubled.

Probably not building next Summer

Man I don't know about that.
Around here you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a log truck.

There is a lot of construction construction going on for sure.
But.
Them boys cutting timber and hauling logs ain't making any more money than they used to.
The "suits" and bean counters are getting rich you can bet.

I'm not sure what the picture of a pole barn is supposed to mean. I am not allowed to build a pole barn by city code. What they really don't want is the vertical steel siding. The last time I checked it cost just as much to build a pole barn with sheathing and lap siding as it did to stick build. You basically have to build full stick built walls in between the posts.

I can build a single story garage up to 3,000 square feet and 45 feet tall, but it must have siding and roof that closely match the house.
A 45' tall single story? Lots of rocket builders around you?

Or did you mean 15'?

For those of us trying to build ****, this is one depressing thread. I swear right when I reach the line, they move the friggen goal post.
You want an eye opener, pull your house up on zillow and ask yourself if you would pay that for the place you own!
All I can say is this will not end well for most people. 2008 is going to look like a picnic compared to where we are heading.

Standard building lumber hasn’t been as bad as what I’m having to pay for aircraft grade spruce and mahogany 45 degree plywood. 3/4”x6” spruce spar stock runs me about 12$ a foot. 1/16”, 45 degree ply runs 250$ for 4’x8’ sheet. Then add around 450$ for shipping....

Been told to expect availability on some stock I need, in 30 months or so.

The person that I had haul in my 60/40 also owns couple logging trucks, he also said he's hasn't made anymore money than pre virus. Couple logging towns is Dieboll and Corrigan, which when you drive through there its nothing but logging trucks. Some I would see look like pencils and others the trees look huge for east Tx. Georgia Pacific has a mill in Corrigan so also see lot 18 wheelers carry out lumber. There's another big name in area but I can't remember the name. Side note, both those towns always have officers working in/out town. If sign says 35,you better being doing 35 or less.

If its the radiata pine plywood I'm thinking of it come from Chile. And that was about the high price when 2x4x8s were $8 a board.

Its more of a cabinet grade product. Its 6 plys so i question its long term stability, but it worked well for my wife's closet project.

I'm wrapping up a project and about a month ago I picked up 20 sheets of OSB for $16.** a sheet at HD. Was there yesterday and noticed the prices had jumped back up to $26.**! Somehow I lucked out on my timing.

Was on my way to a big home store for a couple sticks of 3/4 black pipe knowing it was $32 per stick. Stopped in at the local TV just to see what they wanted... $22ea. I'll take 2 and he cut them in half and reamed the center for me. Was worth the stop.

Needs to be an extreme emergency before I buy any plumbing fittings from the big home centers.
Plan and order all fittings online. Supplyhouse.com is usually 1/3rd of the price and I get stuff next day.
