Lumber storage rack

When an old tree was removed, good wood was saved, sliced in 2" thick slabs. The are piled up in my garage, 2' wide x 6' long x 2.5' tall. The space above is wasted.

So I plan to build a lumber storage rack above the pile, appx 3' W x 7' L x 5' H, with 2 shelves. What material would you use, 2x4 wood or steel tubing/angle? I have a flux core welder. Thank you.

Thank you for the suggestion. But three walls are already occupied. So the rack needs to be stand alone.

Whatever you want but my advice is don’t spend money trying to dry it. You either have a corner to dry or sell it green. It’s going to shrink and twist. That would be fine for me but most guys want kiln dried anymore. I stack boards in the barn to dry. I gave a board to a friend and he turned his nose up and said it was warped bad. They want factory milled and strait.

I get your idea but not sure it will function well as the slabs will be in the way or it will only be as long as the slabs.
Personally i'd put them outside to dry. They will be fine. If not i would make a cart on wheels for the slabs first. Then revisit the idea. Either way i'd use 1/8 wall minimum 2x2 or so tube. You'd be amazed at the amount of weight all of those pieces will have.

Thank you for the advice on the slabs. They belong to my SIL and according to him, they are considered dry now after a few years of storing outside. So they need to stay in the garage.

I will look into emptying a wall and getting either a low height pallet rack or the wood organizer, with the slabs tucked under. Thank you for the suggestions.

I got a pallet rack, modified to 30" depth, 6' height. This setup actually cost less than a heavy duty metal shelf from home depot or Lowes. Thank you.
