Lupear Portomag with Milwaukee Motor

I recently picked up this Milwaukee P-103R / Lupear Tool Products B2 magnetic drill press.
It works but needs a good cleanup.

The problem I am having is finding ANY INFO on this thing. Apparently google doesn't know much especially for Lupear Tool Products.
It appears maybe they were a 3rd party that made bases for different drill motors (based solely on pictures or this base with B&D motors)

Does anyone know anything about these or where I can find more info or even a manual?
I'm assuming that Lupear is long gone but I really can't tell.

BTW it was $75. So I wouldn' t mind putting some time into a restoration.

Anyone have any info on this thing? Hearsay even? I think maybe it is from the 50's but can't confirm

Particularly on the Milwaukee drill motor? It appears that this drill motor may have been used as a handheld with pipe handles but I can't determine which head in order to get brushed or bearings.

I did take apart the mag base and it looks very old school inside but it does work so I doubt I will do much besides clean up inside.

Hey There,

I know this is an old post but I recently acquired a Portomag Magnetic Drill.

I think mine may be a bit newer than yours, not sure though.

I was trying to figure out what in the world was connected to the vacuum tube socket...maybe someone potted a solid state rectifier and jury rigged it? No clue...

I attached some pictures of mine.

Jumping into another area I know nothing about. Lupear appears to be a magnet company who also made tools. The tool part, under a couple of names, shows up from 1955 to 1967 in google books. Maybe up to 1981, but could be just not purged from old lists. Looks like they filed for the Portomag trademark in 1961.


I can’t really see the vacuum tube base, but back in the 80s, I used to see lots of relays and relay/timers and things that plugged into bases that looked like vacuum tubes, but were delay on relays (or delay off), or turned things off after a run time. With those size wires and terminals, that seems more logical than a vacuum tube there. Maybe to give you time to get out of the way once you turn the magnet on so you don’t squish your finger? By following the wires around, you may be able to figure out the function. There were several pin configurations available, with a consistent mapping relative to the key.

Looking into the patent below, I suspect it was to make sure magnet on before drill on.

I believe it has to be a rectifier otherwise the magnet would not be getting DC.

Indeed, that is the purpose of the rectifier (rectifies AC to DC). So we are on the same page!

Thanks for the documents (would you believe me if I said I already found them - I am a huge patent hound, lol).

Well heck, if you've already got the patents and know what a rectifier is for, what the heck you wasting time with us for.? 😉 You should have the as-found wiring drawn up by now, tracked down by the colors, and be all set to explain to us what that you need in a rectifier, and ask us where to find a pin mounted rectifier to match the socket.

Something like this would probably work:


However all it is inside is two diodes forming a half wave bridge rectifier. I will probably obviate the need for the octal socket and just use diodes. I will probably also add a filtering capacitor.

I need to measure how much current the rectifier in their draws, to get a base-line. I also need to power the magnet with a DC power supply and find what yields "good-enough" holding strength.

I'm really all set, I was really replying for antman213's sake as he couldn't find any info on his tool.
