I just found this old Luther Grinder Manufacturing Co. tool at an estate sale. vintagemachinery.org has some information posted about the company and its products. I had to make a few assumptions about when this made from the limited information in the two catalogs that are posted.
This grinder, "Master No. 117" appeared in catalog no. 40, which seems to have a print date of about 1932. It was NOT in catalog no. 34 (no date), so I can assume it was probably made in the 1920s. The patent for the gearing was granted in 1916.
It originally came with a 7" grinding wheel, but was replaced with a smaller Norton wheel somewhere along the line. One interesting feature about the grinder is that it has two oil reservoirs, one for the gearing at the crank, and one which lubricates the arbor. That one also sprays oil on the grinding stone. I don't know if that is by design, or maybe something is broken. The stone is absolutely saturated with oil.
Does anyone have any more information about this grinder?
