Mac 24kt gold 50th anniversary tool sets

Hi i have a chance to pick up some of the Mac tools 24kt gold tool sets and am wondering if they are a good buy? The guy is selling 6 sets for $200 which includes the knifes, ratchet, and wrench sets but he has posted no pics of them! I see them selling on ebay for as low as $30 and over $100. You can't use the tools so they are just collectibles but at about $35 a set it is not a bad deal but i am afraid if i buy them i will just want more and more until i have spent all my money on tools i can't even use

$35 a set, why not use them... tools, not jewelry. Unless you plan to resell.

I've never been a fan of 'collectibles' because they're never collectible. Buy them cheap and use them as tools. I won a set of 95th anniversary Snap On wrenches off the truck once. They sit on my shelf in my office since I have no money in them. I begged my driver to let me trade them in on something useful, his answer was why do you think I gave them away!

I talked to him on the phone and said i can be out there tomorrow to look at them but now he says he only has 5 sets not 6. He has the 5 piece screwdriver set, ratchet only, 3 piece wrench set, 3 piece tool set, and the 1/4th inch ratchet set. I looked on ebay and all these sets have been selling for around $40 each so i am basically paying for what there selling for on ebay. Should i try to talk him down or just forget about it?

i wouldn't buy them, I have enough stuff taking up space. it would be one thing if you won them like countryroad did and dont have anything invested in them to take up some free lookin at space , but what are you going to do with them if/ when you buy them? do you need more tools to just to look at and not use?

I cant understand owning a tool that wasn't intended to use. Its even worse than building show cars that weren't intended to be driven.

Maybe that is why they have such low resale value on ebay? They don't seem to sell for much more then $40 a set? These were probably really expensive new the guy said he paid $600 for all of them!

Mac guy gave me a set of gold wrenches when I bought a couple of boxes in the 1980s. Came in a nice walnut box. Might have opened them up four or five times since. Don't think they have much value as a collectible but if that's what you're into go for it.

SKIP IT. Use your money for tools that you will actually use. When you have all the tools you will ever need then buy the collectibles >Translation - you will never have all the tools you need so just skip buying them and wasting your money.

My ex-BIL use to be heavy into buying Harley and Corvette collectibles, limited edition die cast toys and stuff like their logo jackets/clothes. But he didn't have a Vette or Harley. One day I told him that he had probably wasted enough money on that **** over the years that he could have probably bought a decent used Harley or Vette. The look on his face was priceless.

its not our place to tell you how to waste your money. if you want them, buy them,everyone else who has commented in this thread has said basically the same thing and that they would not buy them.
didn't you have a thread about people from craigslist lowballing you? ...along with a bunch of other threads about buying old junk off of craigslist every week?

I would not use them so they would just be for looks! I was thinking about reselling them but they don't bring any money so they are not worth picking up for $40 a set.

I bought probably 40 sets of them and flipped them quick for a $400 profit all to one guy who probably will never build the display case in his mega garage and display them.

I think I got lucky.

If you will enjoy owning them and derive some pleasure, buy em. If not pass unless you can get them cheap.

Some people like them, I don't.
If you like the stuff then buy it, keep it, display it...whatever
Just don't pay too much.

On the other hand if they cost less than the similar useable tools do then you can buy them cheap and then just used them. You then made all the other sets just a little more valuable

I called him but he didn't answer i left a message saying at this time i am not interested at $200 after doing more research on them and seeing what they sell for. I told him i am willing to buy them if he would go down but if he wants to hold out for more i understand. At more then $30 a set there no really worth it because i can get the sets for the same price on ebay if i really wanted them!

I've thought about buying a set or two of those to use just because they are so cheap and it would get a rise out of certain people in my life. Problem is I can't find a reputable source to confirm or deny that the underlying tool is of comparable build quality. I really can't see them making a special run, but I could see them pulling the ones they plate out before hardening.
