Well MAC is years late to the game of fine tooth ratchets, plus a hefty delay from their announcement in 2014, but this just arrived from Texas. Since these seem to be sneaking out of factories I imagine they'll be on the trucks any day.

Pros:
MAC's excellent chrome.
Small profile head.
Completely sealed mechanism.
Good tight pivot joint with a torx screw. Floppy detents are gone.
Fantastic factory lubrication.
Made in USA, stating as much on an intricate reverse switch.
Nearly 10 teeth engaging the drive gear.

Finally, I don't like most metal ratchet handles. Only 2 brands have caught my fancy. Cornwell, and Nepros (Craftsman Premium are pretty decent too though). The rest just don't feel right or are too thin. I'd happily take a 30 tooth Cornwell ratchet over just about any other ratchet if I couldn't have comfort grips. I can report that this new MAC ratchet is joining my short list, this handle is fantastic and seems to be molded to fit in your palm and the curve of your fingers instead of just making it a pretty shape.

Cons-all very minor:
T6....SIX! Torx for the cover plate. Itty bitty.
Squash gasket for the cover plate is a bit of a pain to reposition during reassembly, although honestly its so well sealed there really shouldn't be a reason to open it.
Roll stamped part number on handle is a bit obscure.

In terms of backlash its smoother than a GW 84 or 120, ever so slightly more resistance than a dual 80. All in all its excellent and worlds apart from their antiquated 30 tooth design.

Looking forward to seeing more from this line. Also really hoping they introduce quick release versions since im a big fan and there are very few choices for QR USA made ratchets. Until then I can see myself getting at least 1 more 1/4" flex.

Few photos below. I didn't take one when I initially opened it however i'll say, yet again, they did a excellent job cleaning and lubricating from the factory. It was practically oozing grease when I removed the cover plate. Not entirely sure what they use, looks almost like petroleum jelly. None the less I cleaned everything during disassembly and re-lubricating with permatex super lube in the process of satisfying both my curiosity, and OCD. Kind of an interesting design utilizing an old school ball detent in the head for the lever and then a floating pawl on top.

Skin, do you think these ratchets are going to be a Mac only thing or might there be some shared Stanley/Proto genetics going on here?

They look pretty nice and now that I have a Mac Unicorn stopping by the shop now I'll have to check them out before they stop coming for another ten years.

They'll undoubtedly go to Proto. Question is just "when?". That's if they even allow MAC to have some exclusivity. The MAC Grip / Duratek screwdrivers came to both brands about the same time.

That said Proto probably wont sell all styles of ratchets, MAC will probably have exclusivity on long flex and the like.

I'm kinda out of date when it comes to Mac tools due to not having a dealer for a long time but I've been doing some snooping and sniffing around the truck lately and lots has changed. I'll have to check and see if he has any of these ratchets.

I'll be anxious to see exactly IF they do go to proto 100% as is...I only say that because my MAC guy has said that the whole "available elsewhere in a different color for less" was killing them in todays age of being able to get anything from anywhere in 48 hours...If I were a betting man, I would say without a doubt Proto gets the new "action"...but the comfort grip handle and various styles will probably stay exclusive to MAC. I know they promised the big cordless 1/2" Impact will stay exclusive to MAC until they release a new/better one.. I think MAC is taking a page out of the SO/Williams book in that regard.

Yes, I said it a year ago...SBD/MAC has been slowly righting the ship and pointing it in the right direction in the past 3 years...A lot has changed...for the better.

Thanks for posting, it does look pretty nice.

So when are you going to put it in a vise and test it out with a 4' pipe?

I know this is sarcasm but I would do it however it would accomplish nothing without something like a skidmore.

Believe me i'd be breaking a lot of tools in the name of science if I had one.

I think that is how most home brew tool testers like to show it on youtube. I never understand it, of course you can break it, it's called leverage.

This made me smile..... So that would be 9 teeth then... :D

Gotta say, those ratchets look lovely... Very nice job.

Also, it's easy to bash a giant corporation, but Kudos to the BigWigs at
Stanely... More Facom and USAG tools are being manufactured in Europe
lately and now these very fine MAC ratchets being manufactured in the USA.

Hat's off to you Chaps...

I like the styling especially the head. Nice touch on the raised USA (instead of stamp or laser edge) on the lever switch.

So who has em' and how ya like em'?

I have the 3/8 Flex head ratchet with comfort handle, traded in my Snap-on dual 80 for it. I will say I like the new MAC ratchets way better than the dual 80, no side flex in the joint and working great after a months use.

How do you compare the back drag between the two? Also, what are your thoughts on the selector? I can't stand the selectors on the HF and older Proto ratchets.

My Dual 80's have spoiled me, so it's hard to venture away from them, but I'd be interested in these Mac's in extended lengths.

I just got mine on Friday. Haven't gotten a chance to use it yet but I was really impressed with how beefy the flex head is on this ratchet. Just feels well built. I'll see how well it does in actual use next week

Sorry for the late response but I will say the ratchet is still going strong.

Back drag on the 3/8 flex head gets better and better as you use it.

No binding or skipping at all (mind you this has been my go to 3/8 ratchet at work so i gets used A LOT!) and the selector is very nice, no issues since I made the last post. It is comfortable and easily changes dirrection with ease.

Here is where I feel this ratchet excells compared to any flex head ratchet on the market, the design of the flex joint. MAC has switched the position of the joining "fingers" and even after really working this ratchet the joint has no side slop.

I am still waiting for MAC to hurry the hell up and make their 1/4 version but after all this time using the 3/8 it will be worth the wait.

My MAC guy had the 1/2" version with him last week. He said the 1/4" was supposed to be coming in about a month, but who knows for sure. I plan on buying a short flex head when they do come out. I haven't had any problems with my 3/8" long handle yet.

I just got one. I still hope Proto brings them out with the knurled handle. It'll be time for ANOTHER box remodel.
Let's see what Snap-On does in response. This thing is a game changer. One thing about the Stanley conglomerate. It takes them a while to get to the table but when they show their hand its" UH OHHH.
Anyone tried the new Dewalt angle grinder ? What a beast and Metabo slick.
The new adapter from 18 to 20V was a slick move too.
