IMG_2897.jpegHello members, I have an older Mac top& bottom combo friction slides in really decent condition. Purchased in 70s and stored in garage since. I was thinking of selling and like to get idea on it value. See picture included. It was my first tool box as a young lad. Thank you.

Your pictures did not post. You might also get better value estimates by noting where you live. I suspect the price estimates for South Africa are different then Denver.

they really nice boxes for home tool collector or storing some organised hardware, drill bits, taps/dies and so forth .
hard to put value on but you tend find value doesn't equal sentimental value/usefulness so sometimes better keep them .
Best way get a price is look for recent sales of similar and adjust that to what you happy with and try the market,
Proper good condition is obviously worth extra coin but it bit hit and miss on easy sale at good dollar ...

Friction slides and shallow drawers diminish value a bit but it sure looks good from here. Where is there?
I might adopt another orphan
I placed it in my parents garage when originally purchased back in 70’s . I wasn’t even driving yet. I would have brought it to my house years ago but garage was filled back to front with blocking access. I would just like to get idea of its value. It’s excellent condition. It does have sentimental value. I’m at zip code 07063.

Hey My mom just passed and house going on market. House needs to be cleaned out. It was all the way in the back and garage was filled from front to back with household items blocking access for years. This is a whole other story in itself. I was able to get it out because we’re having garage estate sales. I’ve been wrenching since the 70’s and it was my first box. Looking to get its value but probably will keep it Sentimental Value Lots of memories.

The 1000 miles between us is a deal breaker.
If I were selling the box I'd expect at least $500. It's utility value exceeds that, keep it.

I spent most of my life wrenching out of the same box with roller bearing slides and a side box.

My condolences for your mother . I'm at a similar point in life with parents passing .
I sold first box I ever had and regret that as been ideal for shop hardware use and had nostalgic value I didn't really consider when sold it .
If real tidy cosmetic condition and all friction slide good I would expect could possibly get 1200+, trouble is only few buyers who got the liking for these and willing pay 1 to 1.5K range and then you still got be within their collection travel range, most will want them for bargain storage .
Not many this old be super tidy so that does make them bit special .
If you can put it to use do so and enjoy it and the memories ... They lovely boxes .

Not much. Under $500 for the set probably. Why can't people think this through for themselves? It's an old non-ball bearing with small shallow drawers. OMG you might sell it for a $100 less than what you could have, who cares. Give it to a eager kid at the tech college and write off whatever value you want to with the IRS.

You know when it comes to the tool boxes it all depends on what you are use too. In the 70s, 80s, 90s, all tool boxes had shallow drawers and lots of them. The way tool boxes are built today. they will eventually have 2 drawers an upper and lower drawer with dividers.

Well made boxes.
Would easily bring $ 500 here.
I have a set of the old Mac boxes with friction slides that works just fine.

The friction slides are excellent working . I did get several offers at a garage sale we are having. You have persons trying to compare with harbor freight. Absolutely no comparison not even close.

OP sorry to hear about your mom. Around here $500-800 would be ballpark. It's in exceptional shape, so if you wait, you might find someone willing to go a thousand or more.

Try the Facebook collectors pages. Great boxes but yes, most people will compare them to harbor freight (which would actually be more useful for lots of people these days due to drawer layout). Or just keep them.

I'm not an expert on prices, but I think that is fair. I'd happily pay that range for an older box.

Not all of us want new boxes with deep drawers and rollie sliders.

What you can sell the box for depends entirely on what someone is willing to pay. I know you don’t want to price it too low, but pricing it too high has pitfalls as well. Unless you have no room for it or really need the money, I would advocate for keeping it.

Years ago I gave my first craftsman top & bottom cabinet away - bought it in the 70’s. It was never great, but it still had a lot of utility left. Although I now have several “better” tool cabinets, part of me regrets giving it away to a younger employee - even if it had shallow drawers with friction slides. Hell, my Kennedy machinists chests have smaller drawers and they remain useful to this day after almost 40 years. I’ve got roller cabs and/or top cabs from Lista, Remline, Kennedy, 80’s Craftsman and a bunch of Masterforce tops and bottoms. Also picked up a harbor freight set last year for the overflow I’m at the point in life when I should start selling stuff, but I just can’t. YMMV - everyone is different.

I don’t need another box, but I’d still pay around $500 for OP’s set if they were in good condition. Maybe a little bit more if it was mint or a bit less if it showed wear. But that’s what I would be willing to pay. That assumes the item is within a 20 minute radius. Again - my criteria, so it’s just a data point.

If I were selling that MAC, in this area, I would ask $1200. I have bought and sold toolboxes for a few decades. I wish I were closer.
I was selling the OP's exact box once and a mechanic told me the tool truck would get $1,200 all day. I said yeah, but the person is almost certainly buying on credit. Cash only sale narrows the buyer pool significantly.

I have that exact same MAC roller and top box.
They were also my first real tool box(s)
Still have both in fact...

They were well used when I bought them off of the Snap On truck in the 80's
So, I kind of figured that they were 70's era...

Your set is in much nicer shape than mine.

I would pay much more than $500 for that set given it's condition
WAY more
.....and I don't really need another set of boxes :)

My advice is to keep it, but if you decide to put up for sale, I'd say $800 and don't take less than $600 at a minimum. Hard to find an old set up like that in that good of condition.
